Pump question?

I have been always confused about D5 pumps and tube type reservoirs, because most tutorials on Youtube use a 5 1/4 inch res pump combo. How does a pump connect to the rest of the loop? Does it connect straight to the res, so a res has 2 inlets, and one outlet?

It depends on the loop but you can either have a pump combo unit or separate pump and res, with it separate you would have one of the ports form the res drain down into the inlet of the pump. This would make sure the pump doesn't run dry and has constant supply of fluid. Other ports on the res that are unused are capped off.
