change the pentium out for a q9300 or better do the LGA 775 to 771 Xeon mod and run an e5450 in it. then up the ram to 8gb and pair with an RX 460 if you want a cheap 1080p gaming machine.

Honestly I'd just use that PC as something like a server or nas and get a new PC if possible, but an SSD and more ram would speed up the PC however I don't think it is worth the investment

You better off building new. Nothing can be saved imo. CPU is old and can not be upgraded to anything modern like Skylake or Haswell. Getting RAM won't improve much performance in game

wrong i had a potato pc with core 2 duo and i swapped it for xeon x5460 and overclocked that sucker to 4.0GHz and it was able to handle a GTX 760 nicely. so as of the graphics get an RX 460

not really since as long as he is fine with lowing some settings here and there, its a budget build, i doubt you can build anything brand new for around $125

he didn't mention he was on budget

if he has an old ass pc of that age lying around like that and wants to upgrade the EXISTING PC then i doubt he wants to drop $600 on a new PC.

Look I'm not saying you can't get something decent out of a PC like that however if it were me I'd not upgrade such an old system since it would not be able to do what I'd want it too, this is why I told him he could and the best things to upgrade for basic performance increases but gave my opinion on the matter.

An ssd and 4gb ddr 3 ram would serve you well and could be moved into a newer system and reused in the future even skylake has some ddr3 mobos around.

I am a paid professional, but only when I am at work...and getting paid.

i know but most naive people would call it a potato with no hope. that is where they are wrong, the LGA 775 platform still is a viable one and a lot of people are still using it today. and with the Xeon mod it makes the platform still very viable to super budget minded people.

moved to new build planning

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.
