I was just about to select all the components for a computer when i saw that the i5 6600k was close in price to the i5 4690k, and this made me wonder, if I should spring for skylake or Haswell, i have done some research, but would like a more in depth comparison of the pros and cons to choosing one or the other. One con i already know is that skylake will be a little more because i will have to buy new RAM.

Thanks!

well what specs do you have now? or is this a new build?

if its a new build, go with skylake. no reason to go down to an older architecture.

I recommend going with Skylake and if your budget allows, go for faster RAM.  My understanding is that faster DDR4 can increase performance.

Yes my budget will allow it since this upgrade will take place over a while, to get all the parts together, And what speed would you recommend if i will be using premiere and be gaming. ?

Only if you get 3000+ MHz ram will it improve and the improvements aren't worth the price difference.

I believe DDR4 3000 or 3200 would be a nice level.

You are just paying more for negligible performance increase, it really isn't worth it.

okay, Thank you for giving some other sets! I have never used any of these brands for ram, but are they reputable and of high quality, meaning they wont brick after only a few months?

Here is a set of DDR4 3000 that is ~ $10 more  than some of the above choices and in my opinion worth it.

Glad it fits your plans.  Visit the show off your setup posts when you rig is complete, I would love to see it.  It's stickied at the top of the General Discussion in the Forums.
