USB mis-advertised MB/s?

So i got a 32GB flash drive, and it says USB 3.0 up to 100MB/s (not 100mbps) and i tested it and it only does like.....12.4MB/s....so like....my 10 year old 16GB flash drive does 3 times that....am i missing something here?

Well the speed depends on the workload. Maybe you were writing to the drive instead of reading, for example.

 

But inaccurate performance advertising is also very common for USB flash drives.

That's the max sequential read speeds in ideal conditions. Your real-life write speeds will be much slower. It's not uncommon from R/W to be something like 90/15 MBps. That's the difference between lower end flash like Ultra and higher end flash like Extreme Pro.

Yeah, it's up to 100MB/s read, with significantly lower writes (as others have said -- 12MB/s sounds perfectly reasonable).

Here's the Userbenchmark for another Sandisk Ultra USB 3.0 drive. 75 MB/s sequential read, 25 MB/s sequential write. If you're transferring smaller files, it'll be slower still.

There's nothing unusual happening here. That's just the limits of the Ultra write speed. If you want faster write speeds look at the Extreme Pro series or Lexar 1000x or 1800x.

Manufacturers need to stop their deceptive BS and advertise both the read and write speeds since read speeds are almost always way higher than write. It's analogous to ISPs that give you something like 60/5, you can only get 60Mbps in one direction and the other direction is crippled to 5Mbps. Same with flash, it will read much faster than write.

found the problem. in security it was giving me no access. so now im able to transfer up to 65MB/s  thanks for the help!
