Will it server?

Server (HP DL360 G5):

1x Xeon E5420

16GB FB DIMM DDR2 800mhz RAM (8 sticks)

2x 72GB SAS HDD

Back at it again, now that I have the server working, ubuntu installed and VNC set up I'm ready to get to work.

The server right now contains 1 Xeon E5420 and 16gb of FB DIMM DDR2 with 2 SAS HDDs

I want to run a minecraft server mainly and from time to time some other game servers (not simultaneously with the minecraft server)

Will the 1 CPU be enough, or should I get 2 XEON E5450s? I can get those for 35$ now, but my biggest problem is power consumption.

Right now I know that the system draws 100 watts roughly (under a "decent" load).

What is all your advice? E5420 enough for minecraft (server only, no client)

Will it host any other game servers?

Leave your thoughts and opinions down below please :D

two things:

1: it'll work, but dont expect it to perform anywhere near a modern server will, G5's are quite dated.

2: adding a second cpu will do jack shit for minecraft server, which is outside of network code completely single threaded.

In other words, keep the E5420 and overclock it :D

Or buy a G3258 rig

Actually as of server release 1.1.0 minecraft servers support multiple cores...

also I bought this G5 for 75$ with everything in it and even a redundant power supply. I didn't want to spend more on a server.

Yes it will do fine. Power and noise would be my only concern :D

It's an actual server, the board doesn't support overclocking.

As well as the fact that I bought this machine for 75$ and that's near my budget of 120-130$

It is not the question "what would do better for minecraft?"

because for that I could continue using my I7 6700K, this is a second machine dedicated to just a server.

Ah I gotcha.

Well, consider making a VM that runs off a single physical core from the i7, although I'm not sure how much it will impact games performance on just 3/6 cores.

Awhh :( . My server is in my bedroom at the moment running 24/7 and it's hardly audible even with the redundant fans as standard.

I bought the server because I don't want my gaming PC running 24/7 especially because I sleep and game in the same room.

The server can be dumped in the shed back in the yard.

I'm DYI'ing a case for it soon, with sound dampening foam and some proper engineering and styrofoam...

I'll see how silent that is and maybe I'll move it if it's good enough xD
