i currently have a 960 and i wana upgrade.  i wana start playing more games on pc and the 960 just aint gonna cut it.  im gonna be playing in 1080 for the moment but i would prefer almost any game i play to be over 60fps.  i do plan on upgrading my monitor in the future to either 1440 or 4k depending on pricing and i dont want to have to get a new gpu when that time comes,  so here is my question,  what is the real difference between the 980ti and the 1070?

Current Rig=  AMD Ryzen 9 5900x, Asus Crosshair Hero VIII, EVGA RTX 3070 FTW3 ultra, 32gb Corsair Vengence Pro RGB 3000hz White, EVGA 750 P2 PSU, 1TB Samsung 980 Pro, 500gb samsung 860 evo, 250GB Samsung 850 evo, 2TB Samsung 970 Evo Plus, 2TB seagate firecuda sshd,  LianLi PC 011 Dynamic XL ROG edition, Corsair h150i elite capelix

If you can get a decent overclock on a 980ti, and you are willing to tweak and mess around with it a bit...sure you can get equal or better performance than the 1070 depending on the game/benchmark/application you test...that's a fact.

Also a fact is that the 1070 support a slew of new features, consume like half the power from the wall...will output much less heat into your case then into your room, will likely be quieter as well and has support for pre-emption (dx12) enabled in the drivers where as the 980ti does not...the GTX 1070 also has 2 more GB of video memory, it's a better card all around even though the performance if both cards are overclocked will be quite similar since maxwell overclocks are good.

That said, if you can find a deal on a 980ti...or a used one that is noticeably cheaper than the 1070...why not? it's still a very powerful GPU i have one in my system myself and i can play any demanding games on ultra settings at 2560x1440 with at least 60 to 70FPS minimums and 80FPS+ averages.

| CPU: Core i7-8700K @ 4.89ghz - 1.21v  Motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX Z370-E GAMING  CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i V2 |
| GPU: MSI RTX 3080Ti Ventus 3X OC  RAM: 32GB T-Force Delta RGB 3066mhz |
| Displays: Acer Predator XB270HU 1440p Gsync 144hz IPS Gaming monitor | Oculus Quest 3 VR
