Hey guys i need some help with finding a good cpu and mobo to replace my old amd phenom ii x3 that has an unlocked 4th core. I am currently using a Asus M4A79XTD Evo with an amd hd 7950. and currently running at its limit at 3.3ghz. i have been thinking on an Intel Core i5-3570K Ivy Bridge with an ASUS Z77-A or an AMD FX-6300 with an ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0. im trying to stay in a 200 to 300 price range.

Yeah, the price will be very different, however the performance delivered by the i5 3570K will be superior, especially when in it's overclocked, compared to an overclocked FX 6300. If you are building a gaming rig and you can afford the i5 3570K and a nice motherboard, there will be no point in considering the FX 6300 as a viable option. If not, the AMD chip is still a very good processor for it's money and will suit you well, it's just not as good as the Intel one.

Have you considered the AMD FX 8320/8350? They are 8-core processors and are around the same price as a i5 3570K. It is expected that games will benefit more cores in the future, since all next gen consoles feature 8-core AMD chips inside.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 - 3900x @ 4.4GHz with a Custom Loop | MBO: ASUS Crosshair VI Extreme | RAM: 4x4GB Apacer 2666MHz overclocked to 3933MHz with OCZ Reaper HPC Heatsinks | GPU: PowerColor Red Devil 6900XT | SSDs: Intel 660P 512GB SSD and Intel 660P 1TB SSD | HDD: 2x WD Black 6TB and Seagate Backup Plus 8TB External Drive | PSU: Corsair RM1000i | Case: Cooler Master C700P Black Edition | Build Log: here

I'm well aware of the performance difference.
