My asus r9 280x has stopped boosting its core clock from 970 MHz to 1070 which is what it normally goes to when i game. This issue has only started recently, some times if i restart my pc it will start to boost again but then when i load my computer up another day it won't boost anymore. Anyone know why/ a fix

I will do a test with chrome open and without

Mine sometimes does that even without a browser running. Either the Windows 10 Anniversary update or the latest AMD drivers cause the issue.

Im not even on the anniversary update yet so shouldnt be that, amd have new drivers so im gonna try them after i do a test with the browser

It's usually "Hardware Acceleration" related to Flash or Browser or Steam video for me.

Still not boosting even with updated drivers and not having a browser open. Should i try update flash to see if that helps?

In Catalyst/Crimson Settings for your Clocks...or Whatever GPU Overclocking Utility you run..

"Power" - Set to a positive value, +20 or +50 if allowed.

It will maintain a higher boost clock for longer

Think of the default value "0" being an unofficial "80%"

Pretty sure it's determined as SAFE GPU Power for ALL locations cos they the GPU Makers do not know where these will end up.

The Sahara Vs Antarctica for example.

With a Positive +20 being 100%(using the 100% Rated Power to maintain Higher Mhz over time), a negative -20 being 60% (dropping clocks to maintain power levels set at 60% (-20)

Since my HD7950/290/290x/Friends 280x and such... It's been the same experience when I play with the "Power" (Some models are -+ 20, some are -+ 50

(Just like Nvidia has Smaller Values for Power Target  but it works the same way(106%/112%/Higher in some cases) Higher values = Actually getting what you pay for, at the expense of some extra temps and noise levels, which is why it's put at 0%.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

So i change this to 20% ?

Yeah buddy. It does not Add voltage, it uses the same as if  it was boosting to max @ "0", it just tells the GPU to stay higher, relaxing the "factors" like temp targets and silence.

It will still Idle normally too, if you ever see the clocks jumping up n down when your using Youtube or other apps, this can also make idle clocks jump up faster when doing those things, but its nothing to worry about, the GPU usage on these apps is so low, even at higher clocks, temps are not as high as gaming load temps.

Test it yourself easily enough, GPU-Z or an MSI overlay, 0% and have a look for 5 mins, then +20%, Some cards will still declock if too warm, but likely you'll hit 1070Mhz for longer if not all the time.

A custom fan curve (adding 5% across the range can mitigate the few degrees hotter it may get from being at a higher frequency for longer) if the slight increase bothers you that is.

I did as you said but when benchmarking using valley the core still only goes to 970 even with the 20+ power limit

AMD Athlon II X4 750K

I wonder if the CPU your rocking, is holding the overall AVGFPS back in games from where they could potentially be,, I can't say for certain obviously... maybe your GPU isn't at full GPU usage (noticed max GPU usage @ 72% in pic), hence it feels it does not need to boost higher...

Could be the case, i really need to upgrade my cpu, i guess i may not have been noticing it being at 970 MHz before, cheers

Remove your crimson drivers and reinstall, Wattman has overridden my clocks too, removing and reinstalling solved my issue.

The last two AMD drivers have been pretty poor for me, when it comes to clocks.

don't update do a full removal using DDU tool, and then re-install....it could be a registry problem with the newer drivers making the clocks get stuck, i had problems with the memory clocks and CPU clock getting stuck at stock speeds, only thing that fixed it was a clean re-install.
