RAM troubles

Hi guys

I upgraded my RAM. Wooh. But then it didn't work :( I have a maximus VI Gene and 4 sticks of RAM. When I have all 4 sticks in there... I get a QO Code of 55 which means there's an issue with the RAM. However, if I put a single RAM stick on the second slot (recommended config in the manual), it works fine (which is how I'm posting this).

Any idea why the multiple sicks arent going? :(

I read there could be an issue with the cooler being fastened incorrecly. I've got a Kraken x64, but I hope that's not it x.x

I tried a config of the 2 furtherest RAM slots from the CPU and it doesn't run.

Check CPU socket pins for anything unusual. Get some isopropyl alcohol and clean the gold contacts on the bottom of the CPU. Re-seat the CPU, then hand tighten the cooler (diagonal pattern) back on to the CPU (don't forget thermal compound).

I hate to make assumptions without knowing, and maybe @Sintezza can help me out on this, but does this board use a polyphase VRM for ram? If so, inspect around the 24 ATX connector on the board for any burns. A friend of mine had the exact same issue as you (same error code too) on an ASUS Maximus VII Hero. Half of his ram VRM died. Now, he was a hardcore memory overclocker, and I doubt this is the case, i just wanted to rule it out to be safe.

My money is something going on with either the socket itself, or the IMC. With too many variables to sort through, it's difficult to just say "this is the problem". Will need to remove some of these variables one at a time.

Does every stick work individually?

Also, did you try to clear the CMOS?

Try each stick in each slot and see if you get post and boot.

Ok guys, here's the results of my testing:

  • Each individual RAM stick works. I tried each one in the A2 slot (there are 4 slots, A1, A2, B1, B2, A1 being closest to the CPU and all 4 positioned to the right of the CPU);
  • Two sticks in A1 and A2 work fine
  • Any stick in either B1 or B2 throws the Q Code 55 error - i.e. any combination involving either of B1 and B2 will throw the 55 error.

Is it my mobo? T.T

In this case I would indeed suspect the mobo having a bad dimm slot or two. You could run a memtest for at least 3 passes on al sticks one by one in the A2 slot just to be sure it's not your RAM.

CPU: i7-12700KF Grill Plate Edition // MOBO: Asus Z690-PLUS WIFI D4 // RAM: 16GB G.Skill Trident Z 3200MHz CL14

GPU: MSI GTX 1080 FE // PSU: Corsair RM750i // CASE: Thermaltake Core X71 // BOOT: Samsung Evo 960 500GB

STORAGE: WD PC SN530 512GB + Samsung Evo 860 500GB // COOLING: Full custom loop // DISPLAY: LG 34UC89G-B

It would seem like you have a problem on the mobo, specifically in channel B. Unless @MageTank knows about something I might be missing, I'd suggest RMA the board.

The CPU socket pins look ok. There was a spec of dust on one of them, and there appears to be some thermal compound on the edge (see middle right)....

Are we sure its ok to go at this with  isopropyl alcohol? Makes me kinda nervous just handling the CPU xD

There doesn't appear to be any burns around the 24-pin connector, and yeah I haven't done any overclocking.

Isopropyl Alcohol is 100% safe on CPU's. I often bathe mine in Isopropyl or Acetone when delidding. I do see the paste that you are speaking of. I would be careful about over-applying paste, as I do see residual paste in other areas of the CPU, but none of them are making contact anywhere dangerous, at least not from what I can see here. Once you clean it and reapply the paste and cooler, try the ram slots again. Let me know how it turns out.

It's going B| I gave the CPU contacts a good cleaning, used less paste than last time (slightly more than a rice grain), and tried not to over-tighten the cooler which is a Kraken x61. I'm not 100% sure what the issue was, but I suspect that it was the CPU contacts. On first-glance it looks fine, but I did see a couple of flecks of whatever on 1 or 2 of the tiny connectors. I also spotted a tiny bit of thermal paste lying in the CPU socket immediately before I put the CPU back in.

Thank you for your help, much appreciated. :)
