Computer is not booting windows

Go to solution Solved by JacobGC,

This exact thing happened to me a few days ago. This could be software, and if it is follow the instruction below. The reason I think this is probably a software issue is because to my understanding, you see the disk drive in your BIOS.

Win 8+

Requirements:

Windows 8+ install USB/DVD (if you don't have either of these then go onto your other computer download Windows Media Creation Tool here, and use Rufus 2.10 to put the ISO on a USB stick(4gb+))

Steps:

1. Unplug any HDD(s) and SSD(s) that are not the boot disk

2. Insert your Windows 8+ USB/DVD into your computer

3. Go to your BIOS and set the boot drive to the USB/DVD

4. Save your BIOS, and reboot.

5. Go through the the Setup until you see "Install Now" (don't select that)

6. Select "Repair" in the bottom left corner of the Setup window

7. You should see a list of options, select "Troubleshoot"

8. You should eventually see a screen that says "Advanced options". Click on it

9. You should now see a screen that says "Command Prompt". Again click on it

10. Once in the command prompt type in "bootrec /FixBoot", then hit enter

11. Once that completes, type in "bootrec /FixMbr", then hit enter

12. Shut down your pc, and reconnect all drives

13. Go to your BIOS and select your boot order to where the Windows 8+ drive is at the top.

14. Save and your BIOS, and reboot.

So when you put the HDD in another computer, that computer booted into Windows from the HDD? If so it might be a PSU or Motherboard problem, if it doesn't boot into windows from that drive then it's a problem with the drive.

I was able to see the files on it but I didn't boot the os.

I'd say see if Windows will boot from that drive on the computer you transplanted to, but knowing that you were able to see the files, does help in the sense that my previous statement of checking the Motherboard and PSU, I'd try testing the PSU by using a different PSU on the HDD, if the HDD doesn't work after that it might be the SATA connectors on the MB or the SATA cable itself.

OK. Thanks for the advice I will you that

Have you tried a different SATA cable and different PSU cable to the drive that isn't working?

If the different PSu cable also makes no difference and the drive still doesn't even spin up, try disconnecting other devices, especially if they are IDE drives and just have the one drive connected and see if that spins up then.
