Can my hdmi do 144hz?

I have a r9 380 gigabye gaming g1 gpu. i want to get a 144hz  monitor that doesnt have display port. how do i know what version of hdmi my card uses? can it do 144hz? will i need a special hdmi cable? or should i spend $40 more on one with display port?
