There is a reason Blu Ray never became big on the PC. Due to the terms on the DRM implemented, there are no freeware players for Blu Ray on the PC.

To add to that, the software to play Blu Ray is expensive. It is actually substantially cheaper (and easier to use) to simply buy a standalone Blu Ray player than to buy such software on PC for the purpose of playing Blu Ray.

I find that incredibly hard to believe that there is no software even for viewing blu-ray?

You can try this: http://www.leawo.org/blu-ray-player/

Most programs are around $60, and blu-ray roms usually sell for around $40. @ $100 investment, it's almost more worthwhile to buy a PS3.

The reason it's such a pain to play blu-ray on the PC is due to Sony's licensing rights. As I understand it, they pretty much continuously charge people for media rights which is why a lot of the software to play it is so damn expensive.

I am looking for a decent software for playing blu-rays and possibly burning them as well.  It's for my uncle in a PC I built him.  Something with a easier UI if possible!

Thanks

Can't Media Player Classic play back blurays? It says "Open Dvd/Bluray" in the file menu.  Doesn't burn them though.

Blu Rays that are not encrypted can play fine on nearly any program that can play video. The blockade is the encryption that Sony has strict control over. While there are means to circumvent this (which is what Media Player Classic or VLC require alongside in order to play Blu Ray), at best, it is legally grey,

Even the programs that are used to circumvent the encryption cast a lot of money, and are not guaranteed to work in the long-term. AnyDVD is a good example.

If OP only intends to play Blu Ray he/she should seriously consider a standalone player. Cheaper, and vastly easier for a tech-novice to use.
