That seems to be a common issue. Just let it run for a day, and it should find what it needs.

I did a clean install of windows 7 professional SP1 and when i click check on updates it takes forever as in like 5 hours without finding any updates.

I've got the same problem. One way you could do this is download the update standalone installers if you need a specific update.

Want to know which mobo to get?

Spoiler

Choose whatever you need. Any more, you're wasting your money. Any less, and you don't get the features you need.

Only you know what you need to do with your computer, so nobody's really qualified to answer this question except for you.

You can find an updated version of the Windows 7 ISO here: http://mirror.corenoc.de/digitalrivercontent.net/

Edit: looks like they don't have any ISOs updated beyond 2011.

Contact Microsoft support about it ( https://support.microsoft.com/contactus ), and choose the Live Chat option. They might be able to force it to work.

Also, you can download all Windows 7 updates up to April 2016 in one go, directly from Microsoft. You can do that through the link, provided here: https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/windowsitpro/2016/05/17/simplifying-updates-for-windows-7-and-8-1/

Here's the direct link, but I doubt it'll work if not used on IE:

http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/search.aspx?q=3125574

There are 3 files to download, two are 476 MB, and one is 316 MB.

You can also check this link, though I'm unsure if it's relevant: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2509997

You might also want to try the things mentioned in the responses to this person asking concerning the same issue: http://superuser.com/questions/951960/windows-7-sp1-windows-update-stuck-checking-for-updates

My personal recommendation is to find a way to install all the Win 7 updates without using the convenience roll-up updates that MS offers for download on that page, because those convenience roll-up updates include the telemetry updates that Microsoft released for Windows 7 in August - September of 2015, packaged up in a manner that makes them not easily removed from the system, and maybe not possibly removed at all (this is probably why Microsoft made the "convenience" roll-up update for Windows 7).

If you can get Windows Updates to start downloading, then you can prevent the download and installation of the telemetry and data-collection updates by using the script linked-to in my signature. Or, by simply making sure to not choose to download and install them.

i contacted microsoft support and they did remote desktop with me so they controlled my computer from their place and after a few hours they still didnt fix it and they are going to check back with me later and when i was about to leave semi negative feedback i guess by saying my problem is not resolved and giving it a 3 star the technician was still in control and she quickly exited out of my web browser. i was like um ok

edit: oh shit the person stopped the remote access but she might have still been looking and saw me type this oops lol
