Need help replacing my laptop

Hi, I'm new here  and I need some help replacing my laptop, yes I know I would be better off performance wise with a desktop but I really need the portability of the laptop for working on the go.

I currently have a msi gt-60 2od with a gtx 780m, 32gb of ram, 3x 128gb sad and a 1tb mechanical HD that I use for video editing, programming and gaming.

The new laptop needs to have thunderbolt since it will facilitate a lot my workload when editing, USB c would be nice too.

At home the laptop will be connected to a external display and external storage (that's why thunderbolt is a must have).

The budget is 3k tops (cheaper would be way better), it also needs to be portable so no 18" msi.

Right now the top contenders are the arous 17 and the msi stealth, Asus strix was a good bet but it doesn't have thunderbolt.

Thanks for the help and let the discussion begin.

This is an overpriced rebrand. Please never buy from Origin. The premium they charge is ridiculous.

There isn't much discussion because everyone who knows a thing or two about laptops right now would tell you to wait the 1 week for the pascal laptops. If you have a 3k budget you should most definitely wait for the new laptops. With the new generation of dGPUs a 1060 rival a 980 laptop behemoth right now. If you need even more horsepower, 1070s will be available in 15inch form factors as well. 17inch "thin and light" laptops would carry a 1060 or 1070 as well because Pascal generates alot of heat.

I'm definitely going to wait for the new GPUs, do you know if there is going to be 1080s on laptops? I could really take advantage of the 1080 for 4k rendering and even some minor deep learning codes

Only in extremely heavy and thick 17in and 18in laptops. Clevo has a P870DM3-G that can fit a 1080 SLI but that thing is 15-20 pounds. Pascal is extremely hot compared to Maxwell so I believe there are few laptops that can fit a 1080. All the laptops I listed are there Maxwell generation and I mean you should look at their pascal equivalent.

MSI GT72s

- There are significant issues with this such as the hybrid power bullshit that needs to be resolved or else this is useless

Clevo P775DM

- This is probably gonna be the "lightest and thinnest" 1080 laptop there will be

Clevo P870DM

- Even with your 3k budget this may be out of reach as this is the 1080 SLI laptop I was talking about.

Everything else such as from Predator, Aorus, Asus I can't recommend cause they're shit. Aorus 17 might be nice if it's a 1060. All 3 manufacturer's build quality, cooling design, bios leaves much wanting compared to MSI and Clevo. Clevo has the worst bios out of all of them, but a talented individual Prema has been providing custom bioses that are sold retail by 3rd party retailers such as Eurocom, HIDEvolution, Mythologic, so if you wish to get a Clevo laptop it should only be from them.

Where are located? I know your 3k budget. 15in or 17in?

15inch BGA - http://www.hidevolution.com/evoc-p650rs-g-15-6-custom-built-gaming-laptop-w-nvidia-gtx-1070-w-g-sync.html

15inch Socketed - http://www.hidevolution.com/evoc-clevo-p750dm2-g-custom-built-gaming-desktop-replacement-laptop.html

17inch Socketed - http://www.hidevolution.com/evoc-clevo-p775dm3-g-custom-built-gaming-desktop-replacement-laptop.html

only the 17in socketed 1 can fit a 1080. Alot of things I would source myself like the CPU which is grossly overpriced. Only get things that aren't readily available for purchase.

If you have preferences towards MSI or Asus or Aorus you can mention them.

So should i go for the 1070 to stay on budget or should i pay a little extra to get something with the 1080? I'm leaning toward asus or msi because of their global warranty (I live in brazil so any warranty claims would have to be done here), I'm not sure if the performance gap between the 1070 and 1080 would justify the extra cost and weight

Getting a 1080 will still stay in budget. As long as your not looking for 1080 SLI $3k will be fine. Lucky for you, there's a prema bios mod shop in Brazil called Avell. http://avell.com.br/ I can't read it and I'm not sure if those prices are way too high or low, but there's an option for Clevo there.

If you want to go MSI, the GT62 series seems great, the reviews so far have been pretty positive. I would wait for someone to get it on NBR and everyone flocks to the guy and generates a battery of tests for the poor guy to run.

The Aorus X5 v6 is going to be pretty interesting to look at it. The v5 version was a decent product. I don't know if they've made changes to accommodate for pascal and if they did it would be a good competitor.

Everything I just recommended is with a 1070 15in. I personally dislike Asus. I don't think they know how to cool shit. Given the GX800 series, I would say Asus hasn't changed and would avoid them for at least this generation or they decide to actually put some R&D into cooling.
