Decompressing compressed files

Greetings. Newly installed windows 8.1 and I need a good FREE (no evaluation periods, popups, etc) software to decompress all sorts of compressed files. What should I use? Thanks.

Do you mean like decompressing a jpg or mp3 or do you mean decompressing a zip or whatever?

If the first, you can't really decompress those files, the data is already gone. The best you can do is make it look better with some programs, but I have found that it doesn't really work great. If decompressing zips, something like 7zip works.. Although I have a feeling you didn't mean decompressing zips.

Ah, I see. Well 7zip is a good program  

It's free, doesn't have the annoying pop ups for purchasing the program like Winrar does

Use 7-zip, I used it to replace winrar, and it works well, although it is a bit slower than winrar, but at least it has no pop-ups, and is lightweight (doesn't take up much HDD space).
