Hello

I am currently looking to upgrade a second hand pc but i do not have much of a budget. I am looking into getting a AMD processor but i have little knowledge of PC,s and next to non about AMD as i am new to PC. The games in which i am looking to play are GTA V and Battlefield 4.  I am looking to run it at atleast 1080p and around 60 fps or above. The GPU i have selected is a

Sapphire Radeon RX 480 Nitro+ 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express RGB Graphics Card. Please help me figure out what i need preferably under 200GBP/260USD/341CAD.

Thanks.

With that money I suggest you go for Intel Core i5 6600K or 6500 (if you don't OC)

What motherboard are you using now?

Depends what CPU socket your motherboard has.

The CPU and motherboard that i have been looking at are -

Gigabyte  970A-DS3P AMD 970A (Socket AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard

AMD Piledriver FX-8 Eight Core 8350 Black Edition 4.00GHz (Socket AM3+) Processor - Retail

But seeing as that CPU has 8 core i feel it may be a little overkill.

Yeah, you really do not need an 8 core. It has been proven that you don't see much difference past a 4 core in gaming.

But why only AMD? Look at Intel as well.

i5 6600k and GTX 1070 but I play 1600-900. 1440p BABY!

Still, don't put too much faith in my buying decisions. xD

That board does not have a great VRM anything past 95w should be avoided so the best is FX-6300... (no OCing will not be a good idea on that board at all...) :(

You want the 6-core minimum :D (with anything past GTX 960)

The reason amd is so cheap is because their cpus are pretty bad for gaming.

Well keeping the price low will also cut performance by quite a lot, which is why no one on the forum recommends amd processors currently for gaming, also you tend to have to spend extra on amd motherboards which cuts some of the price savings

I wouldn't go with any FX series because they overheat if you don't have a proper cooler. Better add 150$ more and buy intel i5 or i3. Better than most of AMD. Not in strenght, but in the power consumption and stability they provide.

il have a look at some i5's then. I don't want to have to worry about overheating. Thanks.

Trust me, I had fx 4300 its the same like fx 6300 and it was overheating like crazy. On Cod Advanced warfare i got 93 degrees celsius and pc shut down. And if you look at the comparisons between processors on google you type for example fx 4300 vs intel i5 (name of proc) eveven some i3 are better than fx even better than those AMDs that have 8 cores...

Intel is frankly a better investment right now.

I'm mentally thumbs-downing the people who are saying, "AMD chips r garbage 4 gaming" and, " Games don't use more than 4 cores!".

Neither of these things are true.

The FX-6300 should do pretty well to hold 60 fps in GTA 5 on max settings, it might need a slight OC though.

As stated, Intel is a bit of a better investment. You can get some of their entry level chips for around the same price as an FX-63xx or even FX-83xx and it will match or beat the performance most of the time due to it's higher IPC. You can also save a bit of money on coolers, hassle on finding a motherboard with a good power phase design, and a cooler.

So, go with Intel for today. It's easier, it's more consistent, and it's about the same price honestly.

the z170 motherboard allows for possible future expansion if the OP decides to upgrade to an unlocked i7 or something. And the i5, being a true quad core should be perfectly fine with most games they play right now. i3 are known to have issues. I would steer clear from i3 if the purpose of the rig is gaming.
