Combine 4GB and 8GB RAM

Yeah then you have 2 choices.

Or you add a single 8GB stick so that you will endup with 12GB of ram running in flex mode.

Or you just spend a littlebit more and buy a 2x8GB 1600Mhz So dimm kit.

And replace the current 4GB module with an 8GB module aswell.

And end up with 16GB in dual channel mode.

If you could afford i would say go for the 2x8GB 1600mhz kit.

Hey guy, I need some help in combining RAM. Currently I had a laptop come with 4GB of RAM, I plan to upgrade my RAM to highest as possible.

Here the RAM I wish to add: https://www.amazon.com/Corsair-1600MHz-PC3-12800-204-Pin-SODIMM/dp/B00EHJ5U0K

Current RAM detail :

11.PNG12.PNG

Does it cause any problem to my laptop?

My laptop was Acer Aspire E5-573G-55DL

Its basicly fine.

But you need to double check your laptop specs about the max memory it supports.

This would most likely rather be 8GB or 16GB.

Your current stick is a 4GB 1600mhz module, so yeah 1600mhz module will be fine.

As long as you dont try to put in more sticks than you have slots, and use the right type of memory, theres very little that can go wrong.

Even mixing different speeds *should* be fine, although some systems are stupid and only check the first dimm, so you have to put the slowest dimm first.

Yeah well since 1600mhz SO dimm´s are very mainstream,

And some laptop boards are realy picky, i would highly advice to stick to 1600mhz dimms.

based on what I know, I don't think mixing different latency will be fine

Fun fact: most 1333 dimms on the market today are rebranded 1600 dimms :P

The system should just pick the slowest latency, but i may do some testing on that at some point :P

i posted a link to the intel article that explains the diffrent memory configuration standards.

But flexmode in laymen terms basicly means that if you put One 4GB stick together with a 8GB stick.

That 2x4GB will run in dual channel + 4GB in single channel mode.

Two of the same sticks in dual channel mode will of course be more ideal.

I run a flex mode setup in one of my laptops aswell.

It doesnt realy effect performance.

But still.

Right now I can only afford a 8GB stick, but how to configure in order to have flex mode? By adding 8GB to slot 1 and 4GB in slot 2? or in reverse?

Does flex mode is a bad idea? I mean does it not recommend to do this?

Well just add the 8GB stick in the availeble slot.

probable named as either dimm slot 1 or 2, depending on if they used to call the first dimm slot dimm 0.

Some boards have dimm slot 0 and 1 other call it just 1 and 2.

But long story short, just use the free slot you have.

And let the 4GB just were it is right now.

Since it shouldnt matter.
