Hey guys

I'm planning to upgrade my GPU, an R9 280 from XFX, near Christmas time so I can run upcoming games like Forza Horizon 3. I was wondering what GPU I should upgrade to that's <=300 USD. I saw the R9 480 and the GTX 1060 and I don't know which one would be better.

Specs are:

i7-4790

8 gb

msi pro guard mobo z97

antec hcg-520m

xfx r9 280

EDIT: Another question, would it be recommended to upgrade to 16 gigs? Or is 8 still perfectly fine, even with the new games coming out

It would depend on when you want to upgrade next. If you can upgrade again soon (1-2 Years), 1060, if you are using it longer than that, the RX480 would be better. The 1060 is faster in DX11 games which is good for now, but in a few years when we have more DX12 games than the 480 would be a better card. Also for the ram, 8GB is fine but 16GB doesnt hurt if you can afford it.

Not really, the GTX 1060 can run DirectX 12 Games better than RX 480. In Vulkan it may not run as run as good, but that's a minority. GTX 1060 has full DX12 Support, and apart from Doom & Hitman: Absolution (AMD titles), the GTX 1060 is perfectly fine in DX12.

Not from the benchmarks I have seen. The 1060 is still a capable card in DX12 games, just not quite as fast as the 480.
