Keep everything the same until you could upgrade to a gtx 1070/ 1080. You wont really get too much of a performance gain upgrading to a 1060 or a 480

1 card is better than 2, and the 480/1060 aren't significant upgrades. I'd say wait for Vega or the new GTX 20 series. The 1070/1080 aren't really upgrades at their price points.

1. If you can get a cheap 970 used or something, then SLI could be fun. It should be noted that SLI comes with its own set of issues, so make sure you research and understand those before you take the plunge.

2. a single 480 is pretty much identical to a single 970 in DX11. and its not really worth the money for the marginal improvement in DX12/Vulkan

3. 1060 is only a bit better, and again is not worth the investment over a 970.

Get a cheaper used 970 for SLI if you want to upgrade, otherwise save for a 1070/1080 or wait for another generation of cards.
