1440p Gaming Build Plan

vuem1

Hi guys,

I currently have an Asus ROG SWIFT PG278Q and want to build a gaming PC that capable of gaming at 1440p 144Hz with G-sync on.

So I came up with this build. Please leave your comments below and give me some feedback as it is my first build.

My maximum budget is $1600, I am thinking whether I should get a gtx 1080 insted or the GTX 1070 Gaming X can handle the max setting.

What do you suggest guys?

GTX 1080 for sure, if you want to max out everything.

Will it worth the extra $200 cash?

The i5 is already bottlenecking the 1070.

The Haswell i5, yes. The Skylake, NO!

Of course the benchmarks are probably at 1080p but there will still be a small bottleneck at 1440p. I'd just get a Xeon E3 1230 V5.

I would go for this instead and if you really want to overclock get the 6700K with a Z170 mobo and a good cooler.

No point in getting something like a 1080 when the i5 will bottleneck it by like 10-30%.

they all do bottleneck it by a slight bit, its because there are no stronger cpu's yet that you cant see a bottleneck

I am not sure where you get these information but Paul build a i5 6600k gaming pc and it run perfectly fine with gtx 1070

thats exactly what i mean, and in a lot of games i see a 5% difference between a 6600k and 6700k. this is like you said a 10% bottleneck. however some games are more cpu intensive and thus have a 30% overall bottleneck. but if you take a stronger gpu most less cpu intensive games will benefit.

He never showed the GPU usage. The bottleneck will also be minimal at 1440p and you will still get good fps. I would just go with the Xeon I suggestion earlier. It's basically an i7 with no overclocking.

And what if he plays CPU intensive games like GTA V, Ashes of the singularity etc?

that is up to op to decide, however i was assuming he played more fps type games because he wanted 144hz monitor compatibility.

Oh wait I made a mistake, I meant i7 instead of Xeon.

Would you say that RPG games does not benefit from high refresh rate compare to FPS games?

a rpg game would certainly benefit from high refresh rates but not as much as a lot of fps games.
