i recently built my computer and i have been running into upgrading problems ( i have fixed those ) my most recent problem is my motherboard TDP. i had a amd fx 6300 which i believe is a 95 TDP but i upgraded to a 9370 which is 225 TDP and my motherboard only supports a max TDP of 200, iv got a msi 970 gaming ATX board, i was wondering if the msi 990fxa motherboard would support my cpu or any other motherboards someone could tell me about.

please get ride of that AMD chip. you need a beast mobo to support it

Can you return it for an 8350 or something?

This is what happens to your vrms, if you run that chip on a low end board.

You will need a better motherboard to support the chip, or as @arch_linuxos said get an 8350, and oc it and it will match the performance of the 9370.

that is why i was thinking of upgrading to a msi 990fxa mb

is there something wrong with the fx 9370? because isn't it just a dumbed down version of the fx 9590. its got the same amount of cores, same TDP just not as high of a clock speed.

From the MSI websiteWarning: This MB doesn’t support 200W or above CPU.

If your motherboard doesn't explicitly list compatibility with the CPU you plan to use (or worse, it outright warns against it), assume it won't work. In the case of a CPU that has an astronomically high TDP, it could actually cause damage in an unsupported motherboard by burning out the socket or VRMs. MSI says not to try it, and I think they really mean it.

Well, neither product really makes much sense today. For all the exotic power delivery and cooling they need, you end up with a CPU that still looks kinda bad compared to a modern Core i5. You'd be better off with an FX-8350 or 8370 until you're ready to upgrade to an Intel system, or at least wait and see what AMD's Zen ends up offering.

i cant find anywhere that msi says dont use this cpu with this motherboard and like i said my brother has fx 9590 and a 990fxa motherboard and has no problems. if it helps i got a corsair h110i gtx cooler for the cpu and on my current system iv got tons of fans and a fan blowing specificly on the vrms because they gey kinda hot. all i want to know is if the msi 990fxa motherboard will support my cpu.
