Intel has moved from the Tick-Tock cycle to Process-Architecture-Optimization. So when should I upgrade to become as futureproof as I could?

Honestly seeing how CPU technology is moving now days you are likely going to get 17% or less of a performance boost each generation. You could probably get Skylake-E and it will last you 5-8 years.

I tend to agree.  A "future proof" system is one that you're constantly swapping parts in and out of.  

 

OP, I haven't found a way to future proof a system yet, but there are steps I've taken to reduce the impact of my need to remain current.   Case, cooling, power, storage, and other basic components will remain the same for me for quite a while.  I do however tend to swap boards, CPUs, and GPUs a lot.

 

Best bet if you don't want to do this is to by the best of what you can afford at the time of build and commit to it.

Skylake to Kaby lake will probably be about 5%. Cannonlake isn't close to being out and none of us as far as I'm aware have a crystal ball.
