GPU for Rendering

I am surprised you got an i7 6700K.

 

I would have invested more in an i7 6800K or 6850K over the GPU side of it.

 

GPU definitely helps, but for jobs like that you definitely want more cores.

Id personally use the igpu and then save up for something a bit faster.

There'a a 100$ between 750Ti and 960(2gb), and a 220$ diff between 750Ti and 970. Is that justified?

 

The thing is I'm just looking for a decent GPU that will handle 10m polys max and dont want to overspend. I dont do much gaming.

Oh man does it ever. On the low end yes I see your point but a 980ti vs a 24 core Xeon. The 980ti blows it out of the water

Id try using the igpu first. If you not rendering on the gpu, then a 750 should be good, but try the igpu.

6700k is faster at modeling due to most opengl viewports are single threaded.

If I was you get one of the new Nvidia cards as they have more CUDA cores (and sometimes for cheaper). Personally I would go for the 1060 and you should be golden, but yeah I do this kind of stuff too and it's really not GPU bound, mostly, a semi decent one will do. If you have a good CPU, which you do, you will be good. I would just recommended against a 750Ti, personally.

I'd get a 950. Better than 750ti, only a little bit more. CPU should be fine on its own though.

Rendering without ECC ram?-_- 750ti or even something like scoring used k2200 will be way too slow for rendering and your cpu will be faster, if you can swap that 6700k for dual xenon e5 system with ecc on c602 chipset or go with amd's 290\390 series as raw opencl performance is hard to beat on those babies and unlike Adobe products, opencl in VrayRT works like it should.

Good thing to look when choosing your gpu is to use lumion guidelines and passmark scores, this will be great indication what minimum gpu you need. I would say you need at least 5-6k passmark score capable gpu for comfortable viewport experience

I've been rendering on my macbook pro 2011 with Intel HD Graphics 3000 with 384MB of DDR3 SDRAM, and the viewport works fine under 2m polys and If it doesn't I just turn off the layers and everything works fine. I'm going to ultimately get a 10xx GPU but dont have the funds for it rt now, coz I've alreay blown my entire budget on CPU, Monitor, 32GB Ram, SSD, HDD, Cooler, Fans, MoBo, UPS :D That is why I was looking at the 750ti(affordable) use it for a few months and sell it, also, others have suggested to go with the iGPU and then upgrade.

I would just use the iGPU at that point and save for a GPU that's worthwhile.
