As the title indicates i have no idea how AIO liquid coolers work, do they need refilling? Do they need any maintenance? Do they need replacing? Where should they be put? etc.etc.

nope, they come with liquid already in them. no maintenance afaik. they'll only need replacing when it fails or whatever.... put it on a radiator mount on your case. top, front, bottom etc

AIO are closed loop, you don't need refills or maintenance. You do need to be careful with tubing installing them though. If you want more information GamerNexus made a great video on Youtube on them. I believe recently enough as well.

No, you just need to watch for cracls i nthe hosing/fittings as the unit gets up in years. I've only seen one AIO that supports manual filling out of the box.

how long do they generally last?

I had an h100i for ...I think 3 years before RMAing it ...it was still fine too the LEDs were just being fucking stupid. the cooling ability of the unit itself was fine. IIRC corsairs warranty on them is 5 years.
