I play a ton of GTAV.  I haven't been playing for about 2 weeks.  Yesterday, I updated my Geforce driver and GTA5 installed an update as well, via Steam.

I then noticed that once in a while I get stuttering while playing.  It wasn't there before.  Hardware hasn't been touched.  OS is up to date with patches.  Thermals are great.  Nothing above 65 degrees under the hood.  The only thing I can think of the screwed something up would be the GTAV or Nvidia driver updates.

1150 i5 4.5ghz

16gb ddr3

1tb hd w/400gb free space

970 ocd 1,450mhz

1080p 22" Acer via hdmi

850 quality bronze psu

Win 8.1

I'm really lost here guys.  Every other game, Doom, FC4, Crysis 3, BF4... are butter smooth 60fps.

Only GTA5 stutters once in a while.  What's odd is that I use Afterburner and I did logging of gpu and cpu statistics and never hit 100% utilization on either one and neither soaked up ram.  Vram got up to 3.2gb so it can't be the 970.

Every single under GTAV is set to max, except advanced.  Keep in mind before the updates, everything was locked at 60fps and never dipped once.  After GTAV and Geforce driver got updated is when the stuttering happened.  On screen fps counter stayed at 60fp despite hitting lower than that.  I know because it certainly didn't feel like 60.

I turned off vsync and it was the same effect.  What do you guys think?

Completely remove your GPU drivers, then reinstall them. If that doesn't fix it try reinstalling the game.

But can anyone confirm that this isn't an issue everyone has been having, I haven't played GTA in a while.

He mentioned that it wasn't the case before, a CPU doesn't just "lose performance". Altough an update might have added some CPU intensive stuff but I doubt that happened.

I guess driver roll back would be the best thing to try now.  Should I remove the driver and install an older one from Nvidia?  Or control panels, driver roll back be sufficient?

Use DDU to remover the old driver and manually install .39

If anyone asks you never saw me.

It might be.  I'm not with the computer right now.  I know my brother talked me into getting the "K" model.  It was $30 more but it over clocked a whole gigahertz faster.  He said my cpu trades blows with i7s.  Low end ones probably.

Your CPU trades blows with high end i7s in gaming :) Streaming while gaming notwithstanding.

Tbh it's probably Nvidia's drivers, not a single one has come out issue-free since 362.00

Try 368.39 for now

And tbh since your graphics card is not supported by driver updates anymore you need not, and honestly shouldn't, update past 362.00.

Bench? :)

I get if you're duing tasks on the background. But even DF showed a small difference between i5 and i7

GTA V. 84 vs 90

Fallout 4. 116 vs 122

Crysis 3. 110 vs 120

BF4. 128 vs 128

Yes, a difference around 7% I would call trading blows. But if you have a different experience you're welcome to say why

You're looking at fps, that's not where a i7 shines. You get a huge reduction in fps dips, it helps with stuttering, and frame times benefit from the increased threads. I specifically went from a 4690k to a 4790k because of the problems my 4690k was having in games like Fallout 4 that lean heavily on the CPU.

It's a pretty huge difference. Then there's the fact your CPU doesn't have to work as hard. That means lower temps. It's just an all around better experience. But it's not free so the individual person has to decide if it's worth it.

Yeah I recommend i7 to anyone with budget over $1200

i can second that.

having turned off HT in my i7, i can confirm that whilst a OCd i5 would get teh same FPS numbers, it would not get the same stability in numbers. IT will jump up and down A LOT more.
