800Mhz vs 1600Mhz RAM

I currently have really old ram 2x4gb ram from from trascend ... im looking to upgrade to 16 gigs 1600Mhz

What are the best ram sticks for price/lookings or should i even just get 2 more 4 gig 800Mhz sticks ( not really conaidering it that much )

If anyone here has nice experience with 16 gig 1600Mhz pls post it

If u have relaly old ram its better to invest in new DDR3 1600Mhz, any brand like Crucial, Corsair, Ripjaws, Kingston etc are good brands and u cant go wrong with them.

Connection200mbps / 12mbps 5Ghz wifi

My baby: CPU - i7-4790, MB - Z97-A, RAM - Corsair Veng. Are you talking about DDR2 or DDR3?

If you have DDR3, which is more than likely the case, your original "800 MHz" sticks are probably DDR3 1600 sticks.  Double Data Rate (DDR) would mean that you multiply the operating frequency of the RAM x 2.

That's what I'm thinking. Knowing the board would be best before assuming DDR3.

Yeah, you are already using DDR3 1600 then.  Just add more DDR3 1600 to it if you'd like.

You're using two DDR3-800 sticks in dual channel which increases the bandwidth to 1600 for better I/O with the CPU. Just get another set like @done12many2 said.

It's telling you that the operating frequency is 799 MHz, which means that it's 800 MHz.  You take that operating frequency and multiply by two for your memory type.

so there would be no difference if i got DDR3-1600 sticks ? or would that mean it increases the bandwidth to 3200 ?

These days most PC's are dual channel so your 1600 would be two 800 sticks.

Correction: RAM isn't doubled by dual channel but by pairing appropriate slots. Just noticed the flaw in my explanation.

That's not how it works, DDR stands for Double Data Rate which means the effective frequency, which is 800mhz on a 1600mhz stick, is doubled to produce 1600mhz on a single stick. Dual Channel operation doubles the data throughput between the RAM and the memory controller/CPU( 64-bit to 128-bit), it doesn't affect the memory frequency.

I would go with any set of RAM from a reputable dealer like Kingston, G.Skill, Corsair, Crucial, etc.

Sorry for the late reply.

Just add to the existing RAM however try to get the same RAM you already have since there is no guarantee the old sticks will work with new ones from a different brand or with different timings, if that happens you will need to replace the old ones altogether.
