I'm starting to realize that my i5 4690k is not going to be able to handle the gtx 1070 that I wanna get when playing at 1080p 144hz. Do you guys think that an i7 4790k would be able to and would be a smart purchase?

On a side note;

how much do you think I could sell a lightly used MSI gtx 780 lightning edition and never overclocked i5 4690k for? Because that may be the funds to help go for the upgrade to an i7.

4790K, yeah. I have one and it works great. I haven't done any major gaming but in the future I plan to get a Titan X or something.

4790k is great, but try to get a used one for less than $300

Then sell your i5 for about 150-200 to make up some of the cost.

If you can drive to a microcenter, you can get a i7 for $289.99 I think

Lightnings are going for around $200 (about the same for the 4690k) but I would want to hold onto my 780 if I had one for explicit multi adapter technology in the future. Keep in mind you will probably be seeing a 10fps gain at most over the i5 so decide if it is worth it to you.

Why a titan x instead of 980ti or 1070? Just curious.

I think he means the Titan X Pascal.

Not familiar with that tech you are referring to. Does the 700 series hold some kind of value to that technology or just old graphics cards in general?

I love the overkill. :)

Oh yeah, I remember hearing about the 12 Gbs thinking "holy shit" because the standard at the time was like 6 if you were lucky haha.

DX12 will allow you to SLI your 780 and the 1070 however developers have to implement it but this will work with any gpu not just the 780.

People buy 4690ks for 150-200 a lot?

Yeah.

I sold my 2500k for $125, and I could have sold it for more if I was more patient.

Oh gotcha. Didn't know that was becoming a thing. I like the future. Essentially the only reason I'd sell the GPU is to help pay for the upgrade to the i7, which from what I've heard definitely holds its own a lot better than the i5 at 1080p 100+ fps

That's insane for a sandy bridge cpu. Correct me if I'm wrong on the generation lol.
