Calling HTC Vive Owners

I recently tried HTC Vive at a Microsoft store. I'm hooked and I really want one but I need to do some research. I've already done some but I wanted to get some answers from people who actually own one. I've done a couple things already including running the steam VR test several times to make sure I get consistent results but I still have other questions.

1. Despite having passed the steam VR test multiple times, is my hardware (6600k oc to 4.5ghz, R9 390, 16gb of RAM) actually capable of running an enjoyable experience on HTC Vive? I know the games and applications I intend to spend the most of the time of if I get an HTC Vive include Tilt Brush, The Lab, and Raw Data. Will my aforementioned hardware be able to run the aforementioned games and apps well?

2. How much space do I actually need? Some sites say something like 5 X 6 feet or something similar to that but what is the actual dimensions you need?

I have played like 80+ hours in just the Lab. When I was in he Dota house and the dragon on the shelf moves when you get close to it. I screamed and fell. Just make sure you don't have a Z87 motherboard. They have problems with USB 3.0 and the tracking is off. Other then that the tracking is the best in the world. Once you get it adjusted for you, you will end up playing it for hours and loosing the feeling of time. It is great. If you have the money I highly suggest one.

1. If you're getting consistent results during the VR test you should be good to go since not many of the games that are out are intense.

2. I play in a 4 x 4 space and have no issues.

3. It's USB 3.0 and no issues with my system (link in my sig)

 

IF you're actually considering the Vive, look into "A Chair in a Room" and "Raw Data".

The more space you have the better really (as long as the light boxes can see each other) but my buddys currently has like.... 2 x 3 feet ...walking experiences are not possible straight up, but you just need to be cautious on what you buy is all to play in that case.

IIRC he said the min recommended in the manual is 2M by 1.5M

It should be fine, though seeing the review of the Vive with the RX 480. The Vive just might not like AMD cards because in the same review the reviewer also test the 480 with the Rift and with the Rift it performed a little better with the 480. I know the 480 isn't quite a 1 for 1 scale of the 390 because in some areas it performs better and in others it performs worse.

 

 

I'd just say that you might want to be sure you have the space for the room scale, because I've seen people say that the Vive can be set up for sitting down, but I've not seen any videos of people setting the Vive up for smaller spaces and sitting down. The Rift also looks easier to set up soooo... (Though the Vive does have Job Simulator which looks interesting.)

@l_zheng101 I should add I don't own a Rift or a Vive but recently I've been getting interested in maybe trying VR or maybe getting an HMD sometime next year if I build a PC later this year.

As I mentioned before it has 0 issues in doing it as long as there are no physical obstructions between you and the lightboxes it manages standing and sitting without issue. 

I say this has someone whos done both standing and sitting with a vive.

The space that was being used is extremely limited as you can see it allowed for some movement but it was nothing and you wouldnt wanna play a game designed for room scale in that sitting. 

But no I didnt do it I might try it when I borrow his unit after I get my 1070 I know you can do some werid stuff with it like sit in the passenger seat or the car or stick your head though the roof lol, when my best friend comes over im going to let her try it with my wheel then im going to have her take a "passenger seat" and really push the car as hard as I can to show her how fast you can be lol.

But IIRC you can fully walk out onto the track nerd3 on youtube did something like that.

Its also a more limited setup. I quite honestly dunno why anyone looking at a VR setup would consider a rift unless cost was an issue because the vive will do what the rift does without issue. the rift will not be able to manage what the vive can do even with the touch controllers.

True, but it seems that the Vive might have a preference towards Nvidia cards because the RX 480 had a harder time running titles on the Vive than it did on the Rift it seemed. Though maybe that's not the case for like the R9 Fury/R9 Fury X or R9 390X.

If immersion is your goal, right now the Vive is the better option but I mean if you just want to get into VR from a more casual approach I can't really fault the Rift too much. Yeah the touch controls or hand sticks as I like to call them are useful but the ones Oculus promises for the Rift seem a little better because they're shorter. I guess I should really try both out rather than relying on videos and maybe intuition I guess.

Still when these HMDs were coming out I didn't really care about it but then I kinda wondered about maybe the GearVR for my S6 and some people had said that PC grade VR is much better and that the GearVR shouldn't really be compared and I started looking more into VR and from what I could tell the opinions of both HMDs was pretty similar.

I should actually say I used the vive fully sitting cross legged on the floor as well with some standing stuff after my legs were getting a lil sore lol. So yeah it handles sitting quite well.

The only way I planned to use the Vive is in room scale mode. The fact that the Rift's hand controllers aren't even out yet eliminates it as an option for me. Even so, for a room scale environment, the Vive's lighthouse sensors will still probably track better than the Rift's camera.

Again if you have the space for it, go with the Vive.

Do what I did and try to make the space diagonally. It measures from where the corner of the sensors are so try to place them high and as close to the corner of the room as possible and than set your boundaries.
