Hey Guys, I'm a little lost on the whole laptop market. Here wishing it was as simple as building my desktop so i decided to look for aid. This is what i'm using currently (It is my brothers laptop and he needs it back so i need a new one.)

http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03898001

Hp Pavilion touch smart 14''

Intel Celeron Processor B877

4GB DDR3 SDRAM (1 DIMM)

Intel HD graphics with up to 1664MB total graphics memory

I hate this laptop, I go from using my desktop that has 4690k and gigabyte 970 to this thing.

My budget is around 600$ and I am looking for a few specific things that are mostly usability.

I am really wanting to get the a laptop that is touch and can fold 360 like the spectre or lenovo yoga. This laptop will be primary for school and will be lugged around. Workload being normal schools stuff such as internet surfing/ video and word. Not sure if at this price range you can game and video edit but if possible i would also do that on this laptop.

Any suggestions would be helpful, thank you for the help.

Buying a cheap 360 hinge design is a bad idea. Cheap ones tend to break. Either buy an actual work-grade laptop or save up.

I can recommend
Lenovo ThinkPad T/X series
HP EliteBook series
Dell Vostro/Latitude series

Those are laptops design for work, not gaming or any other crap like that. They are extremely durable and very well built

It all depends on what class machine you want. If you want a robust work-grade laptop either look at used or save up.

If you are looking for gaming - 800$ is Entry-level

OMG that laptop looks like it's terrible to use. I'm so sorry for you.

But for the laptop, Why do you want a laptop that has a 360 degree hinge? IMO they don't really add to much to the experience of using a laptop.

By the way this'll do exactly what you're looking for:

Dell 7559:

Thinkpads are great laptops. The new ones however, (??30 onwards) aren't as good as the old ones.

I beg to differ - I feel like the newer ones are much better (I use a T420 at work).

People tend to say that cause of the keyboard change - I personally like the new one more ;D

The 7559 is a gaming laptop though - not a work-grade machine. A 2nd hand T450S would be a better choice for the OP in my opinion

Aw, I'm a sucker for the older keyboard layout. It's just so much more functional for me.

I actually use a T540p at work, and a w510 at home, and I can say definitvely I like using the 510 better. But that might just be because I get to use linux natively on it :D

But seriously let me break it down:
Pros of the old ones:

Modularity

Keyboard layout/functionality

Touchpad and trackpoint have much better implementations

Pros of the new ones:

Nicer keyboard (Chiclet-style is pretty dope)

Better hardware

Prettier

Overall nicer screens(but still pretty shit)

....

Wow I can go off about this easily.

He did ask for a laptop that he could both game on and video edit on, and the 7559 does deliver that. I also think that the T450s would end up working out better, but if he's looking to game, the 7559 would be better.

Yeah, I know the older ones were really good but I just feel like the smaller form factor, improved battery life (though reduced performance - ULVs are shit compared to the old "M" CPUs :/) and much nicer screens (IPS <3) make the newer ones a choice for me :D

Oh, agreed. If he wants to game then 850M/950M minimum and 860M/960M preferably. He could also look at the IdeaPad 700 - it's a bit more expensive than the 7559 but comes with some improvements (better display, better audio, better keyboard, NVMe support and is slimmer/lighter though with reduced battery life)

I actually didn't even know that was a laptop. It seems like a pretty good deal. Is it configured with a desktop 950? I'm looking at the spec sheet, it looks like it has an actual gtx 950 in it, which is really weird.

Nah, it's a 950M - but it's still a decent lappy. I almost bought it :D

The main reason for the 360 is because I use E-books for my textbooks and being able to fold it up and just place it on my desk like a "regular" book is pretty helpful. Long study sessions that don't involve looking up at my computer and down to desk are pretty nice. I guess gaming is not really a priority just figured if the laptop can game, I certainly would game on it on the go. Its just not a priority because my desktop is made for gaming. The dell 7559 looks like a really interesting option. What do you guys think about the Lenovo Yoga 710 14". It has the same cpu as the 7559 and has a 940mx. Would that run much slower than the 960m( that is if its using ddr5 and not ddr3) What do you guys think?

960M is 2 times the performance of the 940MX
