Hi, currently I have a 3Tb external hard drive from Seagate which is about 2 to 3 years old. I am planning to change it soon because it hold amost 2.5TB of data.

Right now, the drive is hooked up on my desktop and is share thru Windows Folder Share and PS3 Media Server (when I want to watch some of my picture on my PS3) and this solution had been working great since I have it.

I have a couple of option and I want to have your opinion on it.

     * DIY Nas from an old computer and upgrading the server down the road

     * Store bought NAS such as Synology

     * Another External Hard Drive (like a 5Tb Seagate one)

     * External Drive enclosure (like a MediaSonic HF2-SU2S2)

I would like to upgrade down the road, I dont fear playing arround FreeNAS or any other NAS os. as of right now 4 or 5TB of data are wanted but in the future I would like to upgrade to 10TB. Most of the important data store on this solution will be saved on Desktop as well on Google Drive or OneDrive.

These seem like your best option, but really think about it this way :

Do you want to spend a lot of money?

or

Spend less money but waste lots of time derping around with FreeNAS/UNRaid

A basic synology 4 bay is about 250. Its hard to get a competive system for the price, esp since the synology uses very little power and and is very small.

My FreeNAS Machine is just my old gaming rig being my Home Server/Plex/Etc.

Just removed my SSD/HDD and dropped 8 NAS Drives in it.

I was thinking about putting 200 just for the Hardware (not including Hard Drive).

I think I have an old box at home that will only need some RAM upgrade and a PCI RAID Card (or just something to plug SATA drive).

What is the best drive configurration? I was thinking about RAID 5 but I am not 100% sure

Since I don't have many user having to access the storage, would I lost a lot by using my current desktop as NAS box and a gaming PC?

I've got :

i7 6700

16Gb of RAM

Asus Z170-A

500Gb SSD and 3Tb Seagate HDD

GTX 970

Case : Z9 neo

I would add 1 or 2 120Gb SSD (one for FreeNAS/unRAID and one for Cache) and some 2 or 3 NAS drive.

Would I lost a lot of internet speed? About 95% of the time if I am gaming no one would access the NAS
