Google Cardboard First Thoughts

I don't know what section this actually goes in, since I didn't see a fitting one I just stuck it here. Well I finally bought a Google Cardboard, the poor mans vr headset. And despite it being cardboard, its actually pretty nice. Well constructed and sturdy and even comes protected in a nice cardboard box. And the lenses are good quality at least. It's not very comfy (its cardboard no surprise here) so I think I'll add some padding in the areas the contact my face. I own a Samsung Galaxy Note Edge so I was a bit worried about fitment but it works fine however when I first scanned the QR code and put it on I was seeing double vision. After a bit of googling I found some custom QR codes for different phones and found that the one made for the LG G2 worked and stopped making me see double. Once that was sorted I got to screwing around with some apps and different things. It uses a little magnet to act like a button when it gets close to the phone so that's pretty neat. However, after watching 2 lengthy videos it really did me a number. I don't know if its just for the pure lack of adjustments or being new to VR but I was on the verge of getting sick, I'm going to stick to short bursts. Now what do I really think about it? VR for phones seems a bit gimmicky, until you buy a real headset for your pc but the Cardboard serves it's purpose well. It's cheap (still $15 though for cardboard) and it gives you a limited simple VR experience that you can show to your friends or family and watch something cool every once and awhile. However if you plan on getting one and intend to actually use it a lot, spend the extra cash and get a better headset with comfort and adjustments.

I have one for my 6s plus that has straps and is plastic and I must say I use it a lot. The screen res is not a problem just the flickering when you move fast. The FOV is pretty small compared to my Vive but I can still get immersed if I try. This isn;t to say the Vive is worse as it is much better in every way except it has a cable. If you are someone who wants an idea of VR it is alright but you should really try a Vive/Oculus.

Yeah I would love to have a Vive but its expensive for me at the moment. One thing I noticed is that low quality and low frame rates on videos really did the worst for me.

Same. Had to watch 4K or 1080. Other wise I could not be immersed

I haven't tried Google cardboard but I tried Samsung VR.  I really didn't like it. I had it on for five minutes and my head was starting to hurt from the bad pixelation. 

I tried HTC Vive the same day and it was totally different story. I could wear that for hours.
