I recently bought an Intel Core i7 6700k to go with my GTX 970 SSC, before it arrives and i mess everything up, i thought i would ask you guys. Do i have to take the whole motherboard out of the case before replacing the CPU? I know this sounds like a stupid question, but im new to actually building PC's, and every bit of information helps. Thanks for your time. :)

Im not worried about overclocking, i dont trust myself until im a bit more advanced, i know there are tutorials, but, its still risky business.

then you can get a cheaper option on the H110 or H170 socket. 6700K already has high clockspeed out of the box anyways.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news here, but you'll also need DDR4 memory fot that :(

you should have done more research first...the i7-4790K would have been a better CPU for you to get as it would have worked in the H81 board and DDR3 RAM...

Atleast everyones been nice so far.. Thanks guys for your help. :)

i'm sure you can find someone willing to trade a 4790K for your 6700K maybe?

it's a better chip after all...or maybe you can return it or something and place an order for another CPU?

what CPU you had in the H81 board? a pentium G3XXX i guess?

the Xeon E3-1231V3 would be a great fit...it's locked so no overclocking possible but it has 4 cores and 8 threads through hyper-threading just like the i7 counterparts but it doesnt have an iGPU (intel integrated graphics) if you have a video card you probably don't care about this anyways...good news: it's significantly cheaper than the i7-4790K and 6700K as well. You want a good CPU for gaming? do you want to be able to re-use your RAM and board? or buying new parts and selling your old kit online or something is something you can deal with?

Don't feel bad about mistakes, everyone's made them :P

As other's have said, you have 2 options here:

1. Stick with H81:

- Return the i7-6700k and pick up a supported CPU, detailed here: http://ark.intel.com/products/75016/Intel-DH82H81-PCH#@compatibility . Most likely you'd be looking for an i7-4770 (or 4770k, although the added price gives you Overclocking which isn't supported on H81)

2. Stick with 6700k:

- Buy a new motherboard (Anyting Z170 to take advantage of the overclocking ability of the 6700k, or something H170 if you don't want to OC, although you could've gone for a 6700 instead then)

- Buy DDR4 Ram which is as cheap as DDR3 was when the H81 was around, but required new memory anyway unless you pick up one of the rare Skylake (H170/Z170 etc) motherboards that support DDR3.

That's a nice CPU that's coming in. I'm just gonna say what these guys said before. Get a motherboard that has LGA 1151 socket(usually says it in the name) and get DDR4 memory. Sorry you aren't able to just drop that CPU in and play but now you know and knowing is half the battle right?

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-AX370-Gaming | CPU: R7 2700X | Cooler: Wraith Prism | Ram:  Corsair Vengance LPX 16GB DDR4 | GPU: EVGA 1060 3GB  | Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 250GB SSD + WD 1TB Black | Case: NZXT H440 STEEL Mid Tower Case(Red&Black)

I thought most H81 boards supported overclocking.

Intel has always set up the X-Series and Z-Series motherboards as being enthusiast and for Overclocking, while the H-Series has been the cheaper (but not as barebones as B-Series) alternatives. In theory, yes, Overclocking is supported on H series motherboards, however the power delivery and stability of an OC on a H81 will be lacklustre as it is operating semi out of it's capabilities.

Im not short of money in any means, i just havent gotten around to upgrading yet, and i dont really want a top of the line 10/10 PC, i just want something that can play GTA V, The Witcher 3, and other games comfortably at 60 FPS

then i think the best thing to do is try to find a buyer for your current intel kit...and with the money just order a Z170 motherboard and some DDR4 ram sticks. That will have you set for a very long time CPU wise...all you need after that is graphics cards upgrade for ages.

Yes I know all fo this, but you had said that he can't overclock, but he could achieve a slight oc, still a tdp of 95w. Also (I've been out of the loop for a bit) is there a way to oc on non z170 board for lga 1150? Like an h110 board? I just remember Supermicro doing it and then I never heard anything :P
