Cheapest server!

Go to solution Solved by manikyath,

look around for local resellers of old rackmount gear, you can probably pick up a fully featured HP proliant G5 for €20 :P

I have always been really interested in servesr, I personally have owned and built various game, storage and email server but never with the a proper server style rack case. I was wondering whhat is the cheapest server out there? I want a minimum of 4gb of ram, I do not require hard drives but better if there is one, A psu, a Mobo, a decent cpu. I would prefer used since its cheaper and shipping to spain for cheap. I know this is not practical but I just want to experiment with them on server cabinets with my switches etc. I have looked on ebay but i am not sure, budget is as cheap as possible

Thanks to everyone and if I do buy anything I will make sure to help you in any way possible.

This server will be used either for a NAS or maybe Folding or boic when not needed.

Do have a budget, or just cheapest.

Go on ebay and buy a dell r710 for about 200(dual 1366). You could get a 2950, but your paying for power likes there no tomorrow.

Why not just use your desktop?

as I said before I already have tons (like tons) of desktops and I lwant to experiment with server rack cases.

Is there anything cheaper than an r710? I will probably swap out the hardware anyways.

You can look on forums specialized on web hosting like webhostingtalk at their sales section, you'll find plenty of companies selling old generation servers cheaply. They do it mostly because they're out of lease (older than 2 years) or because newer servers use less energy and produce less heat (the two big costs in a datacenter).

You can also buy used dedicated servers in 1U or 2U form at various used computers stores, here in Romania I know of at least two such online stores that sell used or refurbished servers in rack style cases at relatively low prices. I don't know about Spain or Switzerland but there's always eBay (though shipping of rack cases would be expensive due to how wide they are)

ps. unless you have a rack for dedicated servers somewhere in the basement or somewhere remote in the house, they're not worth it - the fans on such rack mounted servers are generally very noisy, because datacenters don't care how noisy servers are inside racks.

Do you care about power usage.

A r710 is as old as id suggest. Anything older than that and you don't have vt-d, 2tb hdd limit, 32gb max on most models, there louder.

But if you really want a older server look at a dell 2950. There are some on ebay and craigs list for 50 bucks here.

These aren't atx cases and you can really only run the stock motherboard and psu's. You can swap cpu, ram(18 dimms), hdds(pick 2.5 or 3.5 you can't swap that).

where does the switzerland part of your location come into play? that's one of the "key locations for datacenters" in europe, so they'll most likely be all over the place there.
