I have a GTX 1080 ASUS STRIX, is it worth going SLi? or should i sell my 1080 as soon as Volta is here and go GTX 1180?

I have a 4K monitor coming. Bought it like an hour a go.

Its why I went with the 1070 for now, as its all I need for 1440p. I wouldn't recommend going overboard with Pascal, as Volta will be the 800 pound gorilla to watch out for.

This is what happens everytime tech rolls around. Your 1080 will likely be current for 2 generations.

Dude, we don't even have the 1080 in stock yet xD

SLI support is going to me much harder to code for newer games on the new APIs. I would try and stick to a single card as much as possible. But 1080 SLI in games supporting SLI would give you finger of God power.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

Both, it's how the frames are rendered. Proprietary multi card configurations are going to be a thing of the past.

Unless money is no object for you, using your 1080, and selling it when Volta is out, and getting an 1180 sounds like a great plan.

I'm thinking of doing similar with my GTX 1070.

Crossfire uses SLI (scan-line interlacing).

Crossfire is mostly a marketing term.

Nvidia wants to kill 3-way and 4-way SLI to possibly entice programmers to properly code for 2-way SLI builds.

I doubt nvidia limiting SLI to 2-way will entice developers to support it more. If anything, developers who were already enabling SLI were likely only supporting 2-way to begin with. I doubt the new soft-limit on SLI will impact SLI support one way or the other.

Don't be. Think of it like bringing your own cup into a coffee shop. The advantage is its your cup right? But you have to make sure it's clean, and not all coffee shops will agree to let you use your own cup. That proprietary multiple card solutions. DX12 has a feature that makes it possible for any two cards to work together in rendering the frame, as each frame is broken up into tiles that are shared between the two cards. Have two cards the same strength and they share the tiles equally. With about a 50% increase in performance over the single card.

So kinda like you being able to fill your own cup.

The trick is each developer has to decide before the game is developed to implement this, as it's built into the entire game. As of yet only one game takes advantage of it, but Microsoft has been busy pushing it and giving developers incentive to use it.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

It would help those few cases though as SLI has to be specifically coded for either by the developers or Gameworks.

Almost every game with Gameworks (Nvidia) supports SLI. The problem for the Red team is that they don't provide programming assistance as much as Nvidia does.
