I find looking for CPUs a challenge,b because there are thousands of them, and they're so similar...

I want to upgrade from my i5 2500k and stay with DDR3 (because I mostly game and don't need it). So what CPU would you guys recommend for me, since I'm a guy who likes gaming and opening many tabs and performance hungry applications such as visual studio? As for the budget, I'm not sure how much good CPUs are going for nowadays, so I'm hoping you can give an idea about how much damage will be done to my wallet.

You should go with i5-4460 or i5-4690k  one of those will perfect upgrade and it still a decent CPU for most games and will be able to do your multi tasking!

The best CPU you can get while staying on the LGA1150 socket is the i7-4790k. But if that's too expensive for your taste you can get a i5-4690k, as I'm assuming you want to stay with a K series cpu.

What CPU would you recommend if I was to switch my mobo?

is that a performance hungry application?

then my laptop is a beast because it mostly sits idle while working in VS.

It takes up more CPU if you have 3 windows of it open with C++ and a couple of plugins ;) on top of that league of Legends, chrome with a fuck ton of tabs and a virtual machine...

That makes my cpu go up to 90-100%

Well, it depends on your budget. If you still want to overclock you probably would want a i5-6600k or i7-6700k with a z170 board. In canada the skylake and devil canyon boards and cpus cost almost the same. But if you switch to the new skylake you also have to get DDR4 ram they don't support DDR3 anymore.

Sidenote: Also chrome is a butt to run, takes up 16gb of my ram, so getting more ram might help to o-o
