Is the Hyper 212 evo really that good? How much overclocking headroom do I get with it

Its a really good cooler, but the H7 is a bit better, but if you are counting pennies the Evo is better price/performance.

I can say I had overhead for an overclock on an Fx-8350 so most any CPU will have some room.

I use a Gammaxx 300 and got a 900MHz OC on my 2500K. It's a bit cheaper than the 212 and delivers roughly the same performance (when I tested the two I noticed no difference in temps). I also think that it looks better than the 212.

Cryorig H7

Noctua NH-D14

be quiet! Dark Rock 3

Deepcool Lucifer (V1 or V2)

All have great cooling and should give a lot of overclocking headroom provided your processor is capable.

The Cryorig H7 is noticeably better and usually only costs slightly more

reviews I've checked peg the h7 almost perfectly between the 212 and the nh u14s, and what I'm seeing it's priced perfectly between them as well. The only benefit I see is that it's only 145mm tall, am I missing something?

Nah, except it looks like the H7 is more expensive than usual right now. It varies over time.

The H7 isn't right between the 212 Evo and NH-U14S in performance. It should instead perform very similarly to the 212 Evo. It's not that good of a value if it is right between the two in price.

If you want to know how much oc'ing headroom you have, it would help to mention what you're cooling. Otherwise, you could look at benchmarks.
