i7+1060 or i5+1070?

Dubesta11

For starters, I mostly will be using my computer fairly lightly, for streaming videos, working on college papers, and regular web browsing. Some of the time I like to game for a few hours. Since I am in college, I won't have as much time as I would like to play games. So, for 1080p usage and gaming, would it be more beneficial to get a 6700k with a 1060, or a 6600k with a 1070. I would spend more on the second option, but I don't believe that I will need that much power for what I do.

Thoughts? I will be overclocking everything, have SSDs, 16GB of RAM, and a 550w PSU.

For gaming, the i5 + 1070 would be better. For regular usage, they are equally good. For video transcoding, compression, or other heavy "pro" workloads, the i7 + 1060 would be better.

well even if you were a gamer and used only 1080p i7 and 1060 would be better option. and if youre not gaming a lot then i7 definitely.

That's a tough one.. I always go hard on the CPU as that lasts you through a few generations of GPUs. Get the 1060 now and the i7, more and more games use hyper-threading so you will see the benefits.

6700k and 1060,the 1060 will almost max out everything at 1080p

I'm a educated fool with money on my mind.

They say i got to learn but nobody here to teach me,if they can't understand it how can they reach me

Power and the money, money and the power, minute after minute, hour after hour

I think the heaviest thing I will be doing is gaming, I don't think I will ever need to transcode anything major, and if I did an overclocked i5 should be good.

Thats what my idea is, as long as I can get 60-100FPS in all games, I don't care what graphics I have.

You can also go (single) E5-2670 with and 1080 for maximum gaming optimized performance that also would be fine for other things.

Maybe it depends on which games you like to play, and at what settings.

With the GTX 1060 and i7, you'll be turning down settings in graphically-intensive games to achieve 60 FPS at 1080p. With the GTX 1070 and i5, you will be able to play games at max settings and at 1080p.

I have an i5 2500K @ 4.6 Ghz, with an overclocked GTX 1070. And comparing my gaming FPS to benchmark scores posted by other gamers and reviewers, it is clear that an i7 with a GTX 1060 will perform like a 1060, while an i5 with a GTX 1070 will perform like a 1070. There may be games that get bottlenecked, like Arma 3, but they're the rare exception. Everywhere else, you'll be pushing far more FPS with the i5 and 1070 than you would be with the i7 and the 1060.

Also, you can upgrade the i5 or 1060 later on, and sell them to bring the price of the upgrade down.

Witcher 3 on an i7 5820K with a GTX 1060, running at max settings, 1080p (36 - 49 FPS):

Witcher 3 on a my i5 2500K @ 4.6 Ghz with an overclocked GTX 1070, running at max settings (except Hairworks AA at 4x), 1920x1200 (60 - 84 FPS):

I gotta disagree. I'm running 1920x1200 with my GTX 1070, and the only game I've seen bottleneck so far is Arma 3. I did, however, see the data of a person on LTT who was running Witcher 3 at 1440p DSR, and their CPU was bottlenecking performance. But I'm not running DSR, and I have no CPU bottleneck from my i5 2500K, as you can see in the graph in my above post.

If you want me to test a game, let me know and I'll screen-cap a performance graph picture for it, if I have it. But so far, all but one of my GPU-intensive games have experienced no CPU bottleneck.

Also - you have V-sync enabled which makes the whole graph invalid. Disable that and test again.

I had posted the wrong graph image for Witcher 3 above. I've replaced it with the right one now.

I only have GTA V of those games, and I'll post results shortly. But I get 85 - 120 FPS with all settings maxed in GTA V, and if I lower reflection AA to 4x, I get 115 - 140 FPS.

It's something with the LTT forums, because it's disappeared in the thread I originally posted it in, as well.

This is Witcher 3 with my overclocked overclocked 1070 and my i5 2500K @ 4.6 Ghz. All settings maxed, except for Hairworks AA, which is at 4x. FPS is between 60 (only momentarily) and 84. It usually stays between 65 - 76:

I agree the best option would be to get an i5 with a 1070 for gaming, but I won't game a lot. That being said, I won't do heavy gaming 95% of the time I am on the computer. With this information, would you still recommend an i5, or an i7 with an extra 4 threads?

What is your PRIMARY need? Gaming or heavy workload?
Gaming - the i5 is fine...for now
Work - i7 or Xeon
