I'm away from my PC from Saturday, meaning that if I want to upgrade to W10 free I have to do it in the next two days. I'm currently on 8.1, and I really do like it. It's fast, stable and (with Classic Shell installed) has a nice UI. The only reason I would upgrade to W10 is for DX12. Question is: is it worth it? The other computers I've carried out W10 updates on have been horribly slowed down by it, so should I upgrade just for that reason?  Is it worth the risk?

People who have upgrade to W10 from 8.1: any tips? Any problems? How'd it go? Anything I should do beforehand?

Thanks everyone.

On a 8 year old system, i saw about a 50% percent increase in FPS, so DX12  is definetly worth it.

How stable was the upgrade? Any bugs/issues?

Yes, it was slow as fuck on boot up and it took years for the program to load. But I think thats cause of the age of the PC. :D

i've seen a whole range of benefits from using windows 10 on pretty much the entire range of types of devices.

just two things to note:

1: you didnt live in a hole, you're well aware of telimetry, and you have enough of a brain to make your own opinions on it - act accordingly. (i am VERY specificly being vague here.)

2: dont "upgrade". if you're gonna upgrade, upgrade and then do a clean install. (the clean install should detect your system to have had win10 in the past, and activate itself)

Update all your drivers, remove classic shell, uninstall your Anti-Virus and any other security software, and now upgrade.

The upgrade should be successful, if you have never ran any system tweak tools that modified system files, nor had any malware or virus on the system since the last Windows 8 install (remember that an anti-virus and anti-malware only removes the infection, it doesn't fix system changes done by it).

If not, you can clean install Windows 10, and use your Windows 8 product key. You'll need to backup your stuff that is in the C:\ drive/partition before, as everything in there will be wiped, and re-install all your software.

A clean install is generally recommended to ensure the best experience.

Everything's been just boringly solid for me since upgrading (from 7). Haven't even needed to do a clean install. Like, I'd do it if I ran into weird bugs or a BSOD or two, but... I just don't.

It does some annoying stuff like uninstall CPU-Z and you'll have to set your preferred applications again etc. but that's really not a big deal.

So was it slower to boot/load after the upgrade than it was before?

Thanks. A question, if I may: if clean-installing, will that wipe my D:\ drive too? Steam, photos, videos, etc.

C:\ only, assuming you pick the right drive.

If you want to reduce mistakes at the setup stage, rename your drive/partition from "Local Storage", or something more descriptive like "Windows", or "System" on your C:\ drive, and that label will show in the setup stage of Windows 10. So you can pick it, hit format, and click on Next, and Windows 10 will install in there.
