Intel says that, I am not completely sure why but I think it is because they don't have integrated graphics and stronger/more cores.

Actually they work very well for gaming, just as fast as an i7 at the same clockspeed.

They don't have integrated graphics though (which doesn't matter to us serious gamers). The major limitation is they can't be overclocked.

I woudn't mind putting a Xeon in my socket 1155 rig, it has more street cred than a core-i :P

I don't buy them because they are expensive and locked, but the fact is they do game very well so if somehow one lands in your lap or for cheap you shouldn't hesitate to take it.

I dont think they say that, can you quote?

There are no cpus with more/stronger cores on the 115x platform, right? And why would you need integrated graphics when you use a dedicated card anyways?

There will be no QuickSync without integrated graphics .etc

Please, do not use a xeon for gaming, Xeons are meant for heavy computing use and not for things like gaming. Unless you will be running a sever along with your games there is no point.

read my post again

It doesn't matter what they are meant to do, I was talking about what they can do

I wouldn't buy one at normal price but if I had the chance to get one cheap I would

They have features such as ECC RAM that is essential for servers and 3D workstation applications, which is enabled if you use a C220 series chipset (not Z87).  Beyond that there is no significant difference.  Xeon processors at a particular frequency are usually a little higher priced than their Core equivalents (the exception to this is the i7-4770 equivalent for $275 if you don't mind losing the integrated graphics, otherwise it's about $350), and Xeons also don't have the possibility of overclocking like the Core series K SKUs do, so for performance in generic consumer applications, or basically anything except what I mentioned above, they don't offer anything that would change anything, so there are really no reasons why you would get a Xeon over a Core processor except to say you're running a Xeon because it sounds pretty cool.

Skysmad, that's the sandy bridge version of the E3 1230 (i.e. v1). You can however get the ivy bridge version (v2)  from amazon currently for £180, the Haswell version 1230 v3 is actually £180 at aria too atm (+delivery).

As has been said many times all over the internet (and the thread Nishank93 linked) the E3 1230 is the only xeon cpu worth considering for most consumers wanting one for gaming or home use as new as it costs the same as a 4670k but about £50-60 cheaper than the i7 4770. The xeons below this are not much cheaper and have no hyperthreading, the xeons above it are all more expensive usually than the i7 4770. It's only the right CPU though if you meet three criteria:  1. Do not wish to overclock  2. Want the hyperthreading of i7 over an i5  3. Do not want the iGPU (which does have uses such as troubleshooting a faulty GPU for example).

As for motherboard support, gigabyte for example support all 1150 xeons on all their 1150 boards, as far as I can tell. Even in their cheapest b85/H81 boards which still have pcie3/usb3/sata3 etc. (can use this to check http://www.gigabyte.com/support-downloads/cpu-support.aspx).

No, the different classes of Xeons use different sockets. (E3/LGA 1150, E5/LGA 2011, and E7/LGA 1567 respectively).
