Installing win10 on ssd for boot drive

So I have a new ssd and I want to put windows 10 on it for it to be my boot drive. I have windows 8.1 on my big hdd. I need to know if I should upgrade or custom install.

If you haven't upgraded to Windows 10 already with that Windows 8.1 License Key, then you will need to upgrade first so you can be upgraded for free and get your license upgraded as well.  Once that is done, then you can do a clean install of Windows 10 as your key will be locked to your computer.   If you install Windows 10 without the upgrade it won't work as you won't be able to upgrade your 8.1 license.
