So much hate for the Strix when mine is an amazing performer.

I bought a 1070 Strix OC and this thing is incredible! I've achieved a factory overclock of 2114mhz and it never goes above 55c. I know the overclock was probably silicon lottery, but this thing was built like a tank and cools extremely well! So much hate for a card that performs very well.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but more heat coming OFF the gpu and into your room is a good thing. That means that the cooler is doing its job.

Also, I've been outta the loop for a while, whos hating on strix cards and for what reason?

When in doubt, re-format.

gpu cooler designs change each generation, and even differ quite a bit on each card within a single generation.

most of the hate on strix's is from the 970 strix which is designed with quiet operation in mind, and less regard to overclocking (meaning strix's generally OC less than for example an MSI)

please ellaborate on how you know so much about how my 970 strix is only audible when it's slammed 100% usage, and the game itself is running at at least 300FPS? ( 60fps @ 100% usage = quiet)

I see more hate for the Strix on this website than anywhere else. i think it's because of their sub par quality in the past.

this forum is just very idealistic... i mean, i doubt many of the green label corsair CX's caught fire, but still this forum shouts and screams when you strap more than an i3 onto them :P

It's the cheap fans on the Strix 700/900/R9 200/300 which would get absurdly loud past a certain point.

i've had fairly heated (;)) conversations with don about strix cards in the past.

somehow i just cant accept that i seem to be the owner of the only strix 970 that only has audible coil whine when i press my ear onto the card itself (dont do that, it's hot) and doesnt get obnoxiously loud under normal conditions.

Well he is the only person on the internet with a Vishera that can outpace a first gen Core i series per clock too, he's a first on many fronts it seems.

oh i know, but under normal conditions that only happens when the game reaches stupid framerates, like portal 2's loading screen running at 1900FPS.

I don't think the fans on the 10 series Strix models are this way. I've revved mine up to 100% and they really aren't that loud, but there is no point at running them that high because the card never gets hotter than 55c on the stock fan options.

Are you open to change?

I'm pretty sure a Pentium III is slower than a Pentium G3258.

I'm also sure a revised version of a cooler has potential to be better than a previous one.

i'd guess the 980 shouldnt be too much different, and the 980Ti has a triple fan cooler, so i wouldnt be able to tell you there.

that said, R9 390 strix has the 980ti cooler doesnt it? a friend of mine told me those are "worryingly quiet"

Personally, never regarded the past STRIX series as loud but sloppy in thermals. So I guess it changed with Pascal.

Then again, they might just slap on the new NVIDIA STRIX cooler on the RX 480 and let it run hot. Who knows, it's ASUS.

At this point it's becoming like Haswell... die is too small to cool, as the surface area is so small, or am i wrong?

well, the strix 900 cards are designed to run hotter than most competitors, because the card running cooler doesnt directly relate to more performance.
