So the thing is, I'm building a new PC. Never done it before but I'm certain i can pull it off.

The problem therein is that i don't know which one of the new pascal series gpus i'll be picking up.

So i had a thought. My current rig runs two gtx 780 in Sli and i was thinking of building this new PC with only new parts except the gpu (for now) and put in one of my gtx 780s. The reason is that i could possibly be thinking of picking up the gtx 1080ti if and when it launches and i figured i could do with my gtx 780 til then.

My question is: Is this a resonable thing to do?

Thanks in advance!

Ps:Here's what i've thought of buying for my rig (haven't really decided yet so i'd apprecaite som suggestions ;)

CPU: i7-6700K

cpu cooler: something around 25-30$

motherboard 100-150$

RAM: 16gb 80-90$

HDD: 2tb 60-80$

SSD: 256gb

chassi: -

psu: 750-850W 80-130$

GPU: - (gtx 1000 series)

Again, thank you for the help!

its a reasonable thing do to if you can deal with the performance of a single 780 until the 1080 ti comes out (which could be a while)

and how long would that possibly take, half a year?

in the end it's all crystal ball peering, but i'd dare to say they're not *too* far into the distance.

that said, few pieces of advice on the topic:

- that's half of the way there towards building your own rig.

or more?

Probably not anytime this year if history serves. Possible Q1/Q2 next year if we're lucky. You might try to run both 780's in sli untill the 1080 ti release. Or wait and see if amd brings anything to market worth buying in the next few months.

Well I mean i have been exchanging parts in my own rig the only thing I'm worried about is the starting up procedure (installing windows and so on). But i could probably find a video on that from youtube right?

Don't think the 1080 Ti will be out until next year. 1060 is next, then rumors say the 1050 around December, then I think the 1080 Ti will come out next year.

Nvidia will be wanting to milk the 1080 / 1070 for as long as they can.

Linus is my fetish.

If not you could always ask on the forum. Installing windows is about as easy as it gets nowadays though. You likely won't have any issues

to be honest, installing windows is about as easy as pressing next a bunch of times. and with windows 10 they're FINALLY getting a jab at linux's out of the box drivers, my mom's netbook actually didnt need a single driver that wasnt packed with windows.

What is your overall budget, and what is your time-frame for needing these components? And what resolution/fps do you intend to play at?

1080ti or titan P is rumored to be coming out late Q4 or Q1. But its unlikely to fit your budget or that you could even need that much power in your system. If you're waiting for that GPU though, it may also be worthwhile to wait for Kaby Lake (which should be here Q3 or Q4). Its the next line of CPU's above Skylake. If you're waiting for GPU, you may as well wait for that too.

my budget is 4000$+ (absolute max) though i'd rather not even get close to that so maybe around 2000$ for just the pc (maybe this isnt set in stone or anything, just weighing my options).

If you had 4 grand, then maybe it would be wise to get a 1080ti. the GPU itself is likely going to be 800-1000 bucks (judging by the price of 1080, and relative performance). The rest of the computer, if you aren't wasteful, wouldn't be more than 1000 bucks. that takes you to your 2k threshold. It wouldn't make ANY sense to get a 1080ti and then get a 1080p monitor. You are likely going to be running 4k with that card, so you're another 500-900 bucks in the hole for that.

If  you want a 1080ti, I totally support that, but it only really makes sense to do so if you have the monitor to go with it. the combined cost will be alot. a single 1080 is PLENTY for pretty much anyones needs.

moved to build planning

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.
