So with the recent revelation that the i5 4690k is actually a bottleneck at 1080p above 60hz, both of which I fall into, I have 2 choices I am contemplating. Do I just get a 4790k, or should I save up for ~2-3 months and go with 6700k, new mobo and ram? Which would you do.

While both perform equally good, the 6700K is newer, and it does perform slightly better than the 4790K.

I suggest you save up, to enter the Skylake party!

Nothing to see here ;)

Well IMO unless you want to benefit from the new features that skylake brings with it, such as USB type c, more PCI-e lanes etc then I would just go for the 4790k. Then in a few years time upgrade to newer motherboard etc that you might make use of the newer features available at that time.

Personally I wouldn't bother, save up for a 1440p monitor. The bottleneck occurs at frame rates waay beyond 60, which wouldn't matter at 60hz.

Well I have a 144hz monitor. The BenQ XL2411Z that I use as my primary gaming monitor. So this is affecting me unless I were to turn down my refresh rate, which I do not want to do.

Do you have it overclocked?

Personally, I'd get the Intel Core i7-4790K if upgrading from a 4690K.

While the Intel Core i7-6700K does use a newer chipset, supports DDR4, and is slightly faster, I don't think I could personally justify spending the extra money on a brand new motherboard if only concerned about performance. I guess it depends on what it means to you.

Or just do 1440p, unless you need the framerate.

Well when I was looking at monitors I wanted to go 1440p at 144hz, but wasn't willing to spend the 5 or 600 on a decent monitor. Thus the 1080p 144hz monitor.

Can you find used i7 4790k? Do new i7 4790Ks cost as much as the i7 6700k from where you getting it?

Looking at the link that @Anand_Geforce linked, it appears its only a 8% or so jump from the 4790k to 6700k so cost justification may not be worth moving to a completely new platform.

They both are about 325-350 USD for new. There is one on Craiglist semi near me for 230$ and I sent him a message yesterday inquiring about it. Used it 20hrs never overclocked he said so. If he still has it, I will probably go that route 100% without question.
