G3258 overclock motherboard

Hi,

my friend ask me to build him a cheap computer. I want to get him Intel Pentium G3258 and OC it. But Z97 motherboards cost so much. I found someone using H81 and able to overclock. Is it still a thing? Will it work with Windows 10? Is possible to download beta BIOS with OC?

Many thanks for help.

Buy an AsRock Z97 Anniversary... Just to be on the safe side because Intel requires a Z or an X chipset for overclocking

This board is the cheapest Z97 board I could find...

You DO need a Z97 board for overclocking as we don't know if Intel decides to push a microcode update to disable overclocking on B chipset boards...

I would like to, but my friend want to go as cheap as possible. That's why I am asking. If it works and it is supported (he said is not beta), so.

I had read that Intel pushed a Windows Update that makes your PC crash when you overclock a Pentium G3258 on a B85 Motherboard...

I say that it is better to be safe than sorry, as, were this true, your friend's $50 for a B85 Motherboard would be wasted...

It's not that expensive for a Z Motherboard:

Microcode updates dont WORK For disabling overclocking, since it can just be written over with other microcode, and you do not NEED A Z97, intel have left this for a very long time, they told people to introduce it with the G3258.

My current build - Ever Changing.

Number 1 On LTT LGA 1150 CPU Cinebench R15

They did... Until they changed their mind...

As said:

In addition, due to Intel limitation, to support G3258 with Windows 10 configuration, update CPU Microcode is necessary.

However, updating CPU Microcode will make Non-Z OC doesn't work.

If you wish to overclock with G3258 instead of installing Win10, please use the previous BIOS.

For some reason CPU-Z says it's a G3420.
