Hi, I was just wondering, if I were to change my current GPU and swap it for an RX 480 to go with my AMD FX 8350, would I still get good performance or not really?

I've heard that the AMD FX 8350 CPU is apparently horrific compared to Skylake/Z170, Haswell-E/X99 etc etc.... but like, would it still give a decent amount of FPS alongside an Aftermarket RX 480 or..?

If yes, would it able to do 1080p or 1440p at least?

If no, would it be worth changing the CPU or just not doing anything and getting a new rig?

I am planning to get a new rig (Eventually.... I say this because it's gonna take longer than I expected, RIP) but was just curious that's all :P !

Thanks

~Xiauj ^_^

You will be fine with a 480 on that CPU.

I'll actually be blunt. Its terrible when compared to Sandybridge i7 as well. The FX 8350 is similar to the first gen i7-except its a bit better multi threaded due to being CMT not SMT (having modules not hyperthreaded cores). The FX 8350 is best paired with a mid range GPU that won't bottleneck such as the R9 280/280X and R9 2856/380/380X. You'd probably be able to go with an RX 480 if you had it running at 5GHz+, however due to the still low IPC at that clock speed it would still bottleneck far more frequently than if you had even a Haswell i5 4440 (which can bottleneck a GTX 970 in some scenarios).

So it's probably worth getting a new rig huh, hmm ok then.

Thanks!

Yep. The FX 8350 does OK still, but its always been a productivity first, gaming second CPU due to its design and it was outdated before it was even released.

Well, the only reason I have the 8350 in this PC is because, I had the choice of this pre-built PC (Yes I know... pre-builts are horrible, I've learned from that one mistake lol) or a PC that had a Intel 2500k in it and I wish I went for that, there and then.

Keep in mind this was 3 years ago, so I've had this PC for like, 3 years ish.

At least this time around you won't be going pre-built, and are doing it at the right time (when all of the die shrinks to 14nm/16nm are going on-anything from the current generations (excluding anything from AMD still on 28-32nm) will be relevant for quite a long time.

Will be my first time when I eventually get my budget.

i would do the GPU upgrade first and see how it perform in the games you play...if you don't like it then just order an haswell motherboard and CPU that way you can re-use your current DDR3 ram with a faster CPU.

| CPU: Core i7-8700K @ 4.89ghz - 1.21v  Motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX Z370-E GAMING  CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i V2 |
| GPU: MSI RTX 3080Ti Ventus 3X OC  RAM: 32GB T-Force Delta RGB 3066mhz |
| Displays: Acer Predator XB270HU 1440p Gsync 144hz IPS Gaming monitor | Oculus Quest 3 VR

I might do.

One of the choices is actually a Haswell-E build (5820k), it's just that I like said above, it's gonna take longer than expected :/ Either that or a Skylake build which again is a bit expensive.

I'm thinking about getting a triple monitor setup on top of the PC Build sooo that's gonna add on like, an extra £600-£700+ pounds unfortunately, unless I can find cheap(er) monitor options. So yeah, it's gonna be a longer wait than expected until I can properly start PC Gaming.
