Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-B150M-D3H Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  ($57.98 @ Newegg)

Total: $474.84

By the time the RX 470 comes out you'd have increased your budget to $500, enough for the higher clocked i5-6500.

Case and power supply are missing, which would spike the price to around $550

Thank you bro. This is the best one yet. I changed the 6400 to a 6600K. And I chose a different motherboard.

Are you going to OC? Cuz you need an aftermarket cooler for the 6600K.

Btw what case and psu do you have?

I hope you chose a Z170 motherboard, because otherwise no need to buy that 6600k.

Yeah. I chose an Asus Z170-E motherboard. I heard I'm able to overclock a non-K CPU. Is that true? I chose an Intel Core i5-6400.

Yes. I am. If it's possible to overclock an Intel Core i5-6400 with an Asus Z170-E motherboard. I chose a Cooler master Hyper T2. I have a Cougar MX200 and a EVGA 600b 80+ Bronze PSU.

only unlocked intel cpus(those with K in them and some pentium cpus) are able to be overclocked

if BCLK overclocking is what you're trying to do, i don't know much about it, idk if it's still a thing or if some people are still able to do it but i advise against it...

id certainly read more about it if i were you http://www.anandtech.com/show/10021/skylake-overclocking-regular-cpu-bclk-overclocking-is-being-removed

You will, but it is not so cut and dry when overclocking locked Skylakes:

From Magetank (a member here that thoroughly tests hardware) -

Okay, i'll sum this up quickly. When overclocking non-K CPU's, the following things happen:

1. You lose your iGPU.

2. You lose your CPU core thermal sensors.

3. L1 cache speed is reduced by 75%.

4. You lose C-states.

5. AVX instruction set gets disabled.

You might also need to flash a particular BIOS in order to overclock.  I have a place that has archived official OC (non-K CPUS) BIOS' from all the manufacturers.

Do you want the link?

Sure. It sounds dangerous. Should I still attempt it?

It's not dangerous, it is limited.

If you go this route, high speed RAM is a nice thing that Z-Series motherboards support.

I can't make the decision for you.

What I feel is pretty good. 120gb boot ssd, and 250gb hard drive. If you're willing to go over 350 by 10 bucks you can get a 500gb hard drive.

go for a fx6300 and and a a 500GB wd blu

I'm not sure if I want to go for an AMD CPU. Now that I can afford an Intel CPU, I want to go for one of those.

Realistically, what's your budget at this point?

Cuz all this time you've spent planning of OC'ing a 6400 you could have just gone for an i5 6500 + h110 board + 16gb ram + rx 480 with the same budget in your updated build.

PCPartPicker part list

CPU: Intel Core i5-6500 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($204.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H110M-A Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  ($53.88 @ OutletPC)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws 4 series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory  ($63.99 @ Newegg)
Case Fan: Cooler Master SickleFlow 69.7 CFM  120mm Fan  ($5.99 @ NCIX US)
Case Fan: Cooler Master SickleFlow 69.7 CFM  120mm Fan  ($5.99 @ NCIX US)
Other: Sapphire RX 480 Nitro+ 4GB ($200.00)
Total: $519.84

Ditch the oc plans and get the best performance for your budget.

If you post your entire budget, I (and others) can help you round out a build.  Also, what power supply do you have?

I have an EVGA 600B 80+ Bronze. My budget is under $500. I already have an AOC monitor, a Cougar MX200 case. And a Seagate SSHD. I'm not quite sure about the hard drive. I know I have a hybrid, though. I also have a gaming mouse and a Motospeed K70 keyboard. I think that's everything. It's as close as I can get. I'm not home right now and my PCpartpicker list doesn't have any of those parts in it.

Try looking for an old Xeon E5-2670 ($60 at the lowest) and pair it with the cheapest X79 motherboard you can find. That processor may not be as powerful as the latest Skylake i7s but it does overpower most of the LGA1150 and some of the LGA1151 consumer lineup. You can get those and the RAM, GPU, Case and monitor used off Craiglist, eBay etc.  For your PSU and HDD (no SSD), get brand new ones.

How good would it with games? I know the video card is more important. But Intel Xeon CPUs are usually used for server workstations. Not gaming workstations. So that's why I'm not quite sure. Is there any Xeon's that support DDR4?

Don't do that.  It is not for you.  Motherboards are expensive.

This is $285... the rest goes into the GPU.  Try for a RX 480 or a GTX 1060.  A $200 GTX 970 is worth doing as well, if you are in a rush.  RX 480 prices and GTX 1060 prices will take some time to "normalize".
