My 500 watt PSU developed a ... well a fire, internally.  The video signal cut out while watching a video and then about three seconds later the whole PC powered down and tried to restart in a loop until I unplugged from the wall.I used a laser thermometer to determine that the PSU reached 140 degrees Fahrenheit and the GPU got up to 103.

After PSU cooled down I removed it and switched it out for a 550W I had lying around. Now the PC will not output video on the original video card, integrated graphics, or two other random video cards I found. On powerup the CPU and case fans do spin but the GPU fans do not spin consistently, about one second and then an interval of five seconds. I dont have any other computer to test the video card or the MOBO/CPU.

If the problem is with my GPU then the other cards should probably work but if the problem is with the MOBO I dont know how to test anything, and if the new PSU is junk (which is always a possibility with used parts) why would the case and CPU fans spin?

Absolutely lost on what to do.

Check again all connections if everything is connected from PSU to motherboard and from PSU to GPU.

It might sound silly, but even that can happen sometimes. You woldn't be the first person who forgot to plug some cables xD

The 24 pin and 4 pin connectors are hooked up.

It's an LSP Ultra 550W ATX power supply. My parents picked it up used at a thrift store about three years ago and I have left it under a desk until now because I didnt trust it . Didnt have much choice after my new problems though..

Stupid fire.It wasnt even much of a fire, some internal components popped and the case got lightly scorched.

Okay, so it's not modular. Re-check all your connections to ensure they're fully plugged in.

Do a thorough connection check at the motherboard's 8pin and 24pin connectors, slot them with the absolute muscle you have lol to ensure that it has the "clip" sound. Sometimes maybe it just doesn't sit properly due to that.

You also can reinsert the rams to try and see if it would post as well....

My mobo dosent have an 8 pin port but it does have a 4 pin and it seems that the connections are good.

I checked all connecters again with no luck. It has occured to me that I havent heard any beeps from the mobo speaker this whole time. I usually get one beep on startup. Another thing is that I dont have anything plugged into the system fan header, my case fan is running from molex power and the old secondary fan that was plugged into that header had to come out when I installed the new PSU.

If the mobo wont beep, the GPU wont output video, and the GPU fans wont stay spinning longer than a second or so but the CPU cooler and case fan do power up then what could the problem be? Is it the used power supply not working? Also remember that I tried two other GPUs which dont have supplemental power ports so they should have run solely from PCIE.

I hate electrical issues, never understood them.

I'm thinking that I might need to tear down the whole computer and inspect everything.

Trying removing the CMOS battery for 10 seconds with power removed and the computer fully discharged. You can achieve a discharged state by removing power, leaving the power supply on, and holding down the power button for a few seconds. The removal of the battery will reset the BIOS.

Re-seating CMOS and RAM didn't work. Good suggestion though.

When the CPU cooler powers up after hitting the power button, is it continuous? I imagine the whole build shorts itself and shuts off.

CPU cooler and case fans run continuously, including the case fan built in LED. The GPU fans only spin for about a second at low speed and then try again about five seconds later in a loop. No sound from MOBO speaker and no video output. No visible damage to top side of MOBO or GPU. I haven't inspected the CPU or bottom of MOBO yet because it's a pain to uninstall and reinstall them. Plus I have no idea where my thermal compound is at. Lost it a few weeks ago. Even if it was the processor I dont think I could get a replacement for an LGA 1155 CPU, way too old.

Did that help?
