1070 vs. 1080

Go to solution Solved by App4that,

First, don't listen to those who question spending money on better parts. I tried to save money on my SSD and motherboard too and had to replace them because of it. You have a great build.

Second, the 1070 is about a 980ti and that's what I have with a 1440 144hz monitor. I have no issues getting the fps I want so I doubt a 1070 would. You might have to drop a setting here or there to crack 80fps at 1440 but nothing you'll notice. At 1080 the 1070 will destroy anything when paired with your build.

Helloooooo, so... the build time is coming closer and closer (only 2 months left xD ) AND i still cant make up my mind... which one should i put in there? At first i'll game at 1080p 144Hz, but when i can afford the Monitor, i wanna do a leap of faith all the way to 1440p... the thing is... they say the 1070 is made for 1440p, and that, i do not believe... i've seen bechmarks of the 1080 where it reaches about 80FPS in ultra settings, which means that 144Hz 1440p is not a thing yet. To tell ya'll the truth, i could crank the settings down to High, instead of Ultra. I dont have a prolbem to sacrifise the look on the grass and the wind blowing on my avatars hair over getting 5 (or more) frames/sec... Help me out maybe? Please? :/ Thanks

P.S: Tell me which card i should get too.

P.S#2: Someone will ask for them so here are the specs...http://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/B3W4qk Location: Germany, Budget: Was 2k euros... now just let me be... living the dream :)

Budget is not my problem atm... its the decision i have to make

Then what's wrong with not getting the 1080 since budget is not a issue

Is your problem that your not getting enough horsepower to run 144hz 1440p

Don't get me wrong... ive been gathering that for 2 years now... my problem is... can the 1070 by its own deliver constant 60fps in high settings? i'll get the 1440p Monitor in 8-10 months, so i want it to deliver that performance by THEN.

the 1070 is kinda made for 1440p... but it won't deliver 60+ fps in every game, unless you don't mind not using ultra settings. might need the 1080 for that. it's also possible that you need to go with SLI if you're aiming for the 144hz target...

i really don't mind not going for ultra... high is good enough in most games... is the 1080 capable of like... 100fps in high settings 1440p? if not, i might just stick with a 1070 for now and upgrade to 11xx ti for all i know...

the 1080 is capable of delivering that sort of performance. the 1080 is roughly 20-25% faster than the 1070. but if you want 100fps you may need to go with SLI...

like you said 144hz 1440p isn't really a thing at the moment unless you SLI... maybe the 1080ti or next titan will deliver.

but if you're going to play games like CSGO, then a 1070/1080 will do just fine

just some advice on the build swap out the cooler for the NZXT X61 and you might as well go for the Alpha mobo. outside of that the build is good. go for the 1070. the 1080 cant do what you want it to do and it cost at least 250 more. and the 1070 will get the job done, especially if the monitor you have supports gsync. then the difference between 100 and 80 fps wont really matter. get the 1070 for now and wait 2 years for the 1170 which may do 1440p @144hz.

The GTX 1070 is to 1440p what a GTX 970 is to 1080p. Meaning, it can currently max most games' settings at 1440p and get above 60 FPS, but there are still a handful of AAA games that a GTX 1070 can't get 60 FPS in while maxing settings (Witcher 3, Crysis 3, Assassin's Creed Black Flag, Unity, Syndicate...).

If you want to be maxing everything in 1-year from now, best to go with the GTX 1080.

I said 140+fps 1440p is not a thing yet... and it isnt, with a single GPU that is. 80fps 1440p is doable ofc

But that's the beauty of having a high end gpu like the 1080, and a 1440p 144hz gsync monitor. You have no limitations. You want 144hz? Play on medium-high settings. You only want 60 fps and absolutely everything maxed out? Go for it. You want everything on high-ultra? Set the fps at 80 and you're good. That's why i'm upgrading to a 1080 and a acer xb271hu. It's every gamer's dream.
