Hello all!

I am setting up a DIY NAS system for my home as I am tired of seeing (and hearing!) people upset that they need to switch devices or that they lost data.

I am hoping to do a simple set up using FREENAS with 4 or 8 WD red's.

It will generally be used for streaming but will also store things like audio productions so editing can be accessed seamlessly through other devices without having to deal with lengthy export times.

I was wondering if anyone here has much experience with build a new NAS system and if they have any tips or tricks as it will be the first NAS I set up for myself (Have helped friends out before)

Thanks so much!

I will go for an atom motherboard, because they consume little power, have a low TDP and they are powerful enough for a NAS.

For atoms,i am not talking about those DDR2 D525 kinds, they are too weak IMO.What i mean is a C2550/C2750 atom, with 4/8 cores respectively. The 8 core one performs on par with a laptop haswell i3.You can run ECC memory in those boards as well, though ECC is overkill. It generally comes with a lot of SATA ports(like 14 for Asrock C2550D4I and C2750D4I),so it is more than enough. It supports a RAID card too, since it have PCIe Gen 3 x8 slot.Supermicro also makes these kinds of Atom Mobos. Not sure about other brands though.

You can also go for those Celeron C847/C1007U Mini-ITX motherboards with a PCIe slot.Without that slot though, you cannot put a RAID card in there, and they usually only comes with 3-4 SATA ports.

After learning a painful lesson using an i3 as a file server(heat problems),I will never take risks again.Though it seems that my case is a rare one.
