Can someone explain Tor?

I was just reading a news article regarding the closure of Silk Road, but do not understand how the Tor network functions.

 

This is perhaps a big ask, but could somebody explain?

It uses a layered encryption and routing model to help hide the addresses of where the packets come from.

 

The people connect to the Tor network. Their packets are routed into an entrance node, and then through a number of other nodes, and then into an exit node which sends the packets to their destination.

I wouldn't bother with TOR anymore. The whole purpose of TOR was anonymity and considering the FBI are balls-deep in it, it kinda defeats the purpose.
